Free tool

Remove the background, on your device.

Drop in a photo of a person and get the person alone, as a transparent PNG or on plain white. The model runs inside your browser, so the photo is never uploaded. No sign-up, no watermark, no limit. remove.bg's own site closes on 1 December 2026; this one stays free.

Updated 3 October 2026

The first time, your browser fetches the small model it uses (about 7 MB, from sochen.dev); after that it starts faster.

Runs in your browser. Your files are never uploaded.

Several files, or a whole form? Tell Sochen “Make my UPSC photo with a white background, 20 to 200 KB” and it does every step, checks each against the notification, and still keeps your files on your device.

How it works

The person is found by MODNet, an open-source portrait-matting model, running through ONNX Runtime in a worker inside your browser. The first run downloads the model from sochen.dev; after that your browser keeps it. The photo is read, matted and saved on your device, and nothing about it is sent anywhere.

Transparent PNG keeps the person and nothing else, for a collage, a profile picture or a design. Plain white gives a JPEG on white, which is what exam, ID and passport forms ask for. The result keeps the photo's pixels, up to 2,400 on the long side.

For an exam or ID photo

NTA (NEET, JEE, CUET), UPSC and IBPS want a plain white or light background, and each also sets a KB band and often the pixels. The photo and signature resizer does both in one go: pick the form, tick “make the background plain white”, and the file comes out at the size with the ticks to prove it. Use this page when you only want the background changed.

Questions

How does it remove the background without uploading the photo?+

A portrait-matting model (MODNet, open source) runs inside your browser through ONNX Runtime. The model file is downloaded once from sochen.dev and kept by your browser; the photo itself never leaves your device, which you can confirm in the browser's network tab.

Does it work on products, logos or pets?+

It's a portrait model, made for photos of people, and that's where it's good. On objects, text and animals the edges can be rough; for those, a dedicated object cut-out tool will do better.

Is there a size limit?+

Photos larger than 2,400 pixels on the long side are scaled down to that first, which is still bigger than any form or passport upload needs. There is no limit on how many photos you process.

Why is the transparent version a PNG?+

JPEG can't hold transparency, so a cut-out with a clear background is saved as PNG. The plain-white version is a JPEG, which is what exam and ID forms ask for.

Can it make a photo white for an exam or passport form?+

Yes: choose plain white. For the exact KB, pixels and DPI a form wants, use the photo and signature resizer instead; its presets for NEET, JEE, CUET, UPSC and IBPS offer the white background as part of the resize.

Is there a watermark, a credit or a daily limit?+

No. It costs nothing to run because your own device does the work, so there is nothing to meter.
