Measured

Read from our own records when this page was made. It describes what we know, and is not a view on whether to hold DASH. How each part is worked out

What changed

Week to 17 October

Nothing we measure moved much this week: trading volume, reported supply and price are all within their usual range.

From our own measurements only, each against the month before. We do not say why a price moves. How this is worked out · Every coin this week

What it actually costs to sell DASH

Selling $100,000 of DASH into each exchange’s resting bids, measured against the mid price:

ExchangeLostGot backMeasured
Coinbase DASH/USD 0.18% $99,819 2026-10-17
Kraken DASH/USD 0.35% $99,650 2026-10-17

Exchange figures need an account there (and KYC, a permitted country, the tokens already deposited), are before trading fees, and are never averaged with the on-chain figure. Binance is not included: it refuses requests from the region our servers are in. How this is measured →

Watch this number instead of remembering it. A free account keeps DASH on a list, records where it stood the day you added it, and emails you if selling it on these exchanges gets materially harder — one message, not a series. The measurement itself stays public; the account is for being told when it moves without you looking.

What Dash is

Dash is a cryptocurrency described by its creators as digital cash, intended to let people pay and be paid instantly, cheaply and securely. It first appeared in January 2014. The project positions itself as a decentralized payment network aimed at ordinary purchases, with stated acceptance at merchants and listings on major exchanges and brokers.

Dash runs a two-tier network: ordinary mining nodes secure the chain through proof-of-work, while a second tier of incentivized nodes, called Masternodes, perform additional functions and vote on project governance. On top of this structure sit three named features — InstantSend, which settles transactions faster than a standard confirmation; ChainLocks, which locks in blocks to make reorganization impractical; and PrivateSend, an optional mechanism for obscuring transaction history rather than a default state.

Dash is not anonymous by default — privacy through PrivateSend is opt-in, and most transactions on the network are as traceable as any public blockchain. It is also not a single, tidy category of asset: data providers list it simultaneously under smart contract platforms, masternode networks, payment solutions, and proof-of-stake and proof-of-work systems, a spread that reflects classification uncertainty as much as the project's own feature set. It has also been named among assets flagged in US regulatory actions as an alleged unregistered security, a status that remains contested rather than settled. The claim of being a "leading" payment solution is the project's own characterization, not an independently measured ranking, and nothing here about adoption, merchant counts, or fees should be read as current — those figures move and are not part of this description.

Dash pays a share of each block's reward to masternodes, servers whose owners must hold 1,000 DASH. The Dash can be moved or spent at any time, but doing so stops the rewards.

About the asset

Dash has no token contract — it is the native asset of its own chain, not a token issued on someone else's.

The exit-friction index

Once a month we publish what a $100,000 exit really costs across every token we can measure. Leave an address and this month’s figure arrives straight away, and we will write again when the next index publishes. Nothing else, and never to anyone else.
