Shailene Woodley says talking about ex Aaron Rodgers 'always makes me cry' in confession about 'toxic situation'

Shailene Woodley split up from Aaron Rodgers over two years ago but the relationship has left a mark on her.

In an interview with Outside magazine, Woodley, 33, admitted she avoids talking about him because the relationship still makes her emotional.

'I haven’t shared much about my relationship with Aaron because it,' she says as tears begin to fill her eyes, 'always makes me cry.

'It was not right. But it was beautiful,' she added.

Woodley and Rodgers became engaged in 2021, just days after the world learned about their relationship.

They remained engaged for a year before splitting up in February 2022.

She called the period in which their split occurred difficult, though did not specifically say the separation was the reason for her sadness at the time.

'I had a really awful, traumatic thing happen in early 2022,' she said. 'I felt like I lost my soul, my self, my happiness, my joy,' she explained.

Shailene said her empathy for 'someone else' kept her in a 'toxic situation.'

'Empathy,' she added, 'kind of kept me in this loop of feeling everything for everyone.'

'I knew I was depressed when I looked at a tree and felt nothing,' she continued, calling it 'the lowest low of my life.'

But Woodley's best friend, stylist Kris Zero, was the one who helped her get out of her depression.

Zero would wake up Woodley every morning with loud music and helped keep her mind off the angst through various activities.

'Sometimes I was so angry at her,' Woodley said. 'But then we’d go surf, and for ten minutes that day I thought life could be OK again.

'Then the depression would come back and she’d go, "We’re volunteering at the horse ranch!" And we’d find a random f**king horse ranch, and we’d clean up horse s**t. We’d clean hooves and brush the horses, and for 20 minutes that day I thought life could be OK again. And then the depression came back and she’d wake me up the next morning and go, "Let’s go on a hike and bring trash bags and clean up trash!"'

The depression began to dissolve after six months of the activities.

Amid her whirlwind romance with Rodgers, the Emmy nominee gushed to Jimmy Fallon that she did not think she would end up with a person who 'threw balls for a living.'

Fans were devastated when they called off their engagement in February of 2022.

Last January she admitted that their split was the 'darkest, hardest time of [her] life while talking with Net-A-Porter.

'My personal life was sh*tty, so it felt like a big pain bubble for eight months,' she said.

'I was so grateful that at least I could go to work and cry and process my emotions through my character,' she added.

Since they called it quits, the six-foot-two football star was rumored to have moved on with model Mallory Edens.

Shailene, however, has not gone public with another romance — instead focusing on herself and her career.
