Resize Image to 180×180

180×180 is the apple-touch-icon size — the image iPhones and iPads use when someone saves your website to their home screen. Without it, iOS falls back to a screenshot of the page. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded. Need a smaller file instead? Compress or convert.

Why choose 180×180?

180×180 gives a square canvas with a 1:1 ratio and 0.03 MP of detail. People most often need it for the Apple touch icon.

▢

1:1 square shape

The square (1:1) proportion decides how your photo is framed: plan the subject around that shape before you crop.

🎯

The exact size needed

180×180 is the exact size for the Apple touch icon, so your image is shown as-is instead of being re-scaled or cropped by the platform.

🖨

Prints 0.6×0.6 in at 300 DPI

That is 1.5×1.5 cm at photo quality, or 1.2×1.2 in at 150 DPI for posters viewed from a distance.

💾

About 5 KB–10 KB as JPG

A typical photo at 180×180 saves to roughly 5 KB–10 KB at good JPG quality; WebP is usually 25–35% smaller.

✨

Sharp results

A 12 MP phone photo has 376× more pixels than 180×180, so resizing down keeps it sharp.

✂

Framing control

Filling 180×180 from a 4:3 phone photo trims about 25% of it. Drag the preview to choose what stays, or tick “Keep aspect ratio” to keep it all.

Making a proper apple-touch-icon

When an iPhone user taps Add to Home Screen, iOS looks for an icon declared with <link rel="apple-touch-icon"> or a file at /apple-touch-icon.png. The size that matches current iPhones is 180×180 — a 60-point icon at 3× density.

Do not use transparency. iOS fills transparent areas with black, which usually looks broken. Put your logo on a solid background colour before exporting.

iOS rounds the corners for you. Supply a plain square. Do not pre-round the corners or add your own shadow; the system applies its mask and the result will look doubled.

Leave a margin. Keep the logo within roughly the central 80% of the square so the rounded mask never clips it.

PNG format. Export as PNG, save as apple-touch-icon.png in your site root, and most setups will pick it up even without a link tag.

The rest of the icon set: 32×32 and 16×16 for the browser tab, and a 512×512 for web app manifests.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my apple-touch-icon have a black background?

iOS does not support transparency in home-screen icons and fills transparent pixels with black. Place your logo on a solid colour (often your brand colour or white) before exporting the 180×180 PNG.

What aspect ratio is 180×180?

180×180 has a square (1:1) aspect ratio. Any size with the same ratio — for example 184×184, 192×192 — can be scaled to it without cropping.

How big will a 180×180 image print?

At 300 DPI (photo quality) 180×180 prints at 0.6×0.6 inches (1.5×1.5 cm). At 150 DPI it covers 1.2×1.2 inches, fine for posters seen from further away.

How large is a 180×180 file?

A photo at 180×180 is usually 5 KB–10 KB as a JPG, and about 4 KB–7 KB as WebP. If you need it smaller, run it through the compressor afterwards.

Will my photo lose quality at 180×180?

No — a normal phone photo is much larger, so it is scaled down and stays sharp.

Can I resize to 180×180 without cropping?

Yes. Tick “Keep aspect ratio”: the whole picture is kept, but one side may come out shorter than 180×180. Without it, the image fills 180×180 exactly and the edges that do not fit the 1:1 shape are trimmed.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Resizing happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted or stored, and you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
