CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Universities and colleges have no value without students, their performances play a
vital role in which to be consider as the asset to help the society develop its economy.
Senior High School is a 2-year curriculum added in secondary education enabling
students to have a better foundation before entering the higher education. It was
implemented composing of different strands such as Accountancy Business and
Management (ABM), Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM),
Technical Vocational Livelihood (TVL), Humanities and Social Sciences ( HUMSS) and
General Academic Strand (GAS). Each strand offers different majors that are related to
the course you will take in college. Also, it seemed that the SHS program has encouraged
those who dropped out to return to school. Perhaps, there was a realization that someone
who finishes senior high school would have better chances of entering the university,
college, and better chances of finding a job (Briones, 2018).
Graduate students will be receiving National Certificate II that enables them to have a
job in line with their strand specially those who took the Technical Vocational Livelihood
track. On-the-job training (OJT) or work immersion is one of the requirements for all
Senior High School students. It aims to provide them the skills they will need as they
become part of the labor force. DepEd reported that 28 percent of the graduates
belonging to technical vocational strand were hired immediately due to the “work
immersion or on the job training” requirement in SHS.
Despite all the good intentions by various government to build a good educational
2
system there is alarming reports about poor performance of students in Senior High
School in the country (Sumaila, 2017). A lot of students failed to graduate due to different
factors. According to Stephan & Schaban, 2002, the factors affecting the students’
performance are the following:
Psychological - behavior of the students; Economic - students does not participate due
to lack of learner’s module, materials and the like; Social - there are students who lack of
confidence; Personal - these includes family and financial problem; and Environmental
Factor - this is due to the school environment, people within the institution.
Mostly of the previous scholars focused on the issues like teacher education, class
environment, gender difference, teaching style, family educational background and
socioeconomic factor.
Tabango Senior High School, Tabango, Leyte is a school institution that offers an
Accountancy, Business and Management, and Humanities and Social Sciences. There are
