A leaf spring is a most common form of suspension spring used for heavy vehicles.
Its made of number of strips curved and bolted with U bolts and clamped together,
Attached to body frame and axle of vehicle.
Suspension system in a vehicle is important to improve the riding comfort and stability of vehicle.
It is subjected to millions of various stress cycles, leading to fatigue failure.
This paper presents design and consideration of fatigue stress acting up on leaf spring.
And a detailed analysis of stress and deformation in it also studied.
Analytical calculation has also been done by CAD modelling using Analysis software.
LITERATURE SURVEY
• N.P. Doshi, et al. [1] has proposed design modification in existing leaf spring with dynamic load effect
consideration by implementing analytical and finite element method. Stress and deflection analysis has
been carried out by using ANSYS 11.0. They have concluded that on reducing number of leaf spring
from 17 to 13 weights reduced by 6 kg and cost reduced by20%.
• G. Goudha, et al. [2] has developed finite element models to optimize geometry and material of
composite elliptical leaf spring by considering spring rate, shear stress and log life as working design
constraints. Effect of ellipticity ratio on the performance of composite elliptical leaf spring was
investigated both experimentally & numerically. They have concluded that the composite elliptical leaf
spring can be used for both light & heavy commercial vehicles with significant weight saving.
Composite elliptical leaf spring with ellipticity ratio of a/b=2 showed optimum results.
• VinkelArora, et al. [4] in their work has done design and analysis of conventional mono leaf spring
standard eye end and casted eye end. CAD modeling was done in CATIA and analysis was done in
ANSYS under similar loading conditions for parameters like deformation, von-mises stress, normal
stress etc. They have concluded that for similar static load application, when standard eye is replaced
with casted eye deflection was increased by 5.4%. von-mises stress was reduced by 3%. Normal
stress was increased by 19.08% and minimum factor of safety reduced by 13.1%. Further they have
concluded that CAE tools are economic and less time consuming with result variation in a specified
range as compared to experimental testing
• Kumar Krishan, et al. [5] in their work has done design and finite element analysis of conventional
SUP9 steel multi leaf spring including two full length leaves in which one is with eyed ends and
seven graduated length leaves. Finite element modeling was carried out in CATIA V5 R17and was
imported in ANSYS11 for finite element analysis. Bending stress and deflection observed from the
finite element analysis was compared with the experimental results under full and half load
application. They have observed 0.632% variation in deflection and 10.11% variation in bending
stress under full load application and 0.632% variation in deflection and 17.95% variation in
bending stress under half load application which is negligible. They have concluded that CAE tools
give batter results with negligible variation and the design was safe from failure under given load
conditions
NEED OF THE PROJECT
• Leaf spring is the potential component for weight reduction in order to achieve
high fuel efficiency and batter ride characteristics.
• In present work conventional steel leaf spring materials and different alternative
materials proposed by many researchers are listed and their effects on
performance, reliability are studied.
• Weight reduction also gives additional advantages in terms of increased pay load
and enhanced fuel efficiency to the end customer.
• Leaf spring suspension assembly is a system which not only damps the road
shocks and assure comfortable ride but also acts as a structural member and
absorbs breaking torque, driving torque and lateral loads.
• Leaf spring Composite materials are high strength fibers combined with suitable
matrix material such as epoxy as resin. Combination of these two materials gives
favorable mechanical properties such as high strength to weight ratio, higher
stiffness, high natural frequency, good fatigue strength, higher natural frequency
and good resistance to corrosion.
METHODOLOGY
• Journals are studied based on leaf spring and vehicle suspension system
• We are choosing a specific vehicle and measuring its leaf spring dimensions
• Comparison has to be done with respect to composite material and carbon steel material
EXPECTED OUTCOME
• We are able to point out a better alternative to conventional leaf spring material with
better properties.
• Sustainable
• Economical
• Efficient
