Overview of OSI Model Functions

The document discusses the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The OSI model defines seven layers of network communication: physical, data link, network, transport, session, presentation, and application layer. Each layer is responsible for different aspects of network communication, from physical transmission of bits at the physical layer to application-specific functions at the application layer. Some common network protocols are also listed for each layer.

INTRODUCTION :

Established in 1947, the International Standards

Organization (ISO) is a multinational body dedicated to
worldwide agreement on international standards .An ISO
standard that covers all aspects of network communications
is the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model. It was
first introduced in the late 1970s.
ISO is the organization .OSI is the model
The Open Systems Interconnection is the
model developed by the International
Standards Organization.

Benefits

Interconnection of different systems (open)

Not limited to a single vendor solution

Negative Aspect

Systems might be less secure

Systems might be less stable
FUNCTIONS OF PHYSICAL LAYER

[Link] characteristics of interfaces and media

[Link] of bits (encoding)
[Link] rate
[Link] of bits
[Link] configuration: point--2--point or multipoint
[Link] topology
[Link] mode: simplex, half--duplex, full
duplex
The physical layer is responsible for the
movement of individual bits from one hop (node)
to the next.
FUNCTIONS OF DATA LINK LAYER

1. Framing
2. Physical addressing
3. Flow control
4. Error control
5. Access control
The data link layer is responsible for
moving frames from one hop (node) to the
next.
FUNCTIONS OF NETWORK LAYER

[Link] addressing
[Link]

The network layer is responsible for

the delivery of individual packets from the
source host to the destination host.
FUNCTIONS OF TRANSPORT LAYER

[Link] point addressing

[Link] and reassembly
[Link] control
[Link] control
[Link] control
The transport layer is responsible
for the delivery of a message from one
process to another.
