GitHub MCP Server

An MCP server that connects AI assistants to GitHub repositories, issues and workflows, available as a local connector or GitHub-hosted service.

GitHub MCP Server connects compatible AI assistants to GitHub so developers can ask about code and have an assistant act on repository activity. It's GitHub's official connector for the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

  • Repository context: Assistants can search code, read files and examine commits across repositories they have access to.
  • Issues and pull requests: Create and update issues and pull requests, review changes and maintain project boards through your assistant.
  • Workflows and releases: Inspect GitHub Actions runs, investigate build failures and manage releases.
  • Security findings: Retrieve code scanning findings and Dependabot alerts for an assistant to examine.
  • Project activity: Access discussions and notifications alongside repository context.

The server is open source under the MIT license. You can run it locally with Docker or use GitHub's hosted remote service. Compatible hosts include VS Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor and Windsurf; the hosted service requires a host that supports remote MCP connections.

The local connector still makes requests to your GitHub instance, so it doesn't provide offline access to hosted repositories. Authentication uses OAuth or a personal access token, and granted permissions determine the assistant's access. The local server also supports GitHub Enterprise Server and Enterprise Cloud with data residency.
