Context7
A locally runnable MCP server and CLI fetch version-specific docs for coding assistants from a hosted service. The server code uses the MIT license.

Context7 is a locally runnable MCP server and CLI that connect coding assistants to its hosted documentation service. It's for developers who want library references and code examples in their assistant's context. The local component is the connection to that service: the API backend, document parsing and crawling engines remain private hosted components.
It searches the Context7 index for a library and retrieves material relevant to a coding question. Version matching helps an assistant use references for the package version in a project, rather than depend entirely on its training data. A known library ID lets it retrieve documentation directly.
Developers can use MCP documentation tools with assistants such as Cursor and Claude Code, or pair the CLI with skills that guide documentation requests. Both approaches supply reference text to the assistant. When used with Claude Code’s standard cloud connection, model interaction sends prompts and outputs over the network to its model provider; running the documentation connector locally doesn't change that dependency.
For developers adding retrieval to their own applications, Context7 provides a REST API, TypeScript SDK and Vercel AI SDK tools. It also has a pi.dev extension.
The MCP server code is open source under MIT. Context7 recommends an API key for service access. Its index includes community-contributed projects, and it doesn't guarantee the accuracy, completeness or security of every library's documentation.
