Forge
A terminal coding assistant edits local files and runs tests using providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic. Apache 2.0; its search server can be self-hosted.

Forge is a terminal coding assistant that works on files in your own development environment while sending model requests to a configured provider, including OpenAI or Anthropic. It's for developers who want an agent to make code changes and run commands within their existing projects.
Its implementation agent reads files, writes patches and runs tests while keeping context across a conversation. Sage examines architecture and traces data flow without changing code; muse analyzes the project and writes implementation plans. Saved conversations let you return to earlier work, and ZSH integration brings agent conversations into the shell.
Custom agents can have their own models, tools and instructions. Reusable skills handle tasks such as executing a plan or drafting a pull request description, while AGENTS.md files provide persistent project conventions. A restricted shell mode limits filesystem access.
Semantic code search finds relevant code by meaning. Indexing sends file contents to Forge's hosted workspace server by default; you can self-host that server instead. This server choice is separate from the provider that handles model requests.
Forge is open source under Apache 2.0. It supports ongoing terminal conversations and individual coding requests.
