Cline is an AI coding agent for developers who want help understanding a codebase, making changes and running project tasks. It works in VS Code, JetBrains IDEs and the terminal, with a standalone desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux.

  • Project edits: Make coordinated changes across files, respond to linter and compiler errors, and review or undo work through diffs and checkpoints.
  • Planning and approval: Review a proposed approach in Plan mode before Act mode carries it out, with individual approvals or automatic approval for edits and commands.
  • Command execution: Let the agent run terminal commands, tests and build scripts, then respond to their output.
  • Recurring work: Run the CLI without interaction in scripts and CI pipelines, schedule tasks, or coordinate specialist agents with context that persists across sessions.
  • Project tools: Carry coding conventions into sessions through rules and skills, connect external tools through MCP, and build custom agents with the SDK.

Cline supports local models through Ollama and LM Studio, plus self-hosted OpenAI-compatible endpoints. Claude, GPT, Gemini and other cloud backends process requests at the selected provider, so the model choice determines where those requests go.

The shared agent core is open source under Apache 2.0. The JetBrains plugin itself isn't open source.
