Introduction to Bluetooth Technology

Bluetooth is a wireless technology invented in 1994 that provides short-range connectivity between devices to replace wired connections. It operates using short-wavelength UHF radio waves in the industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band from 2.4 to 2.485 GHz. Bluetooth allows up to eight devices to connect in a piconet, with one device functioning as the master and up to seven functioning as slaves. Data transmission can be either asynchronous at up to 721 kb/s or synchronous at up to 64 kb/s. Bluetooth Low Energy was introduced in version 4.0 and is designed for very low power operation, while Bluetooth Classic refers to the basic rate/enhanced data rate versions and supports higher data rates and power levels

INTRODUCTION TO

BLUETOOTH
TECHNOLOGY

Presented by

INTRODUCTION
 Bluetooth was first invented in1994 by Ericsson
 This technology provides short range, wireless
connectivity between devices.
 It was intended to replace the cables connecting
portable and/or fixed electronics devices.
 Cables limit the mobility of the consumer and are
easily lost or broken
WHAT IS BLUETOOTH?

 It’s a wireless technology used to transfer data between different electronics devices.
 It is a high speed, and have low power microwave link technology, designed to connect phones,
laptops and other electronic equipment's .
 The distances of data transmission is small in comparison to other modes of wireless
communication.
 This technology eradicates the use of cords, cable, adapters and permit the electronic device to
communicate wirelessly.
WHAT IS BLUETOOTH TECHNOLOGY?

 It consist of band base processor, a radio and an antenna.

 The base band processor converts the data into signals, the antenna of another Bluetooth device, within
atleast 30 feet distance, receives a transmitted signal in air
 It uses a frequency hopping spread spectrum technique (FHSS) – which is one of the two basic
modulation techniques used in spread spectrum signal transmission.
 Frequencies are switches repeatedly during radio transmission to help reduce unlawful access or other
means of interruption.
FHSS Spread spectrum
BLUETOOTH CHARACTERISTICS

 It operates in free 2.4Ghz ISM microwave band.

 Upto eight devices can be networked in a piconet
 PICONET- It’s a small wireless network that
includes one master device and seven slave
devices.
 Power consumption is low about 0.3mW.
TRANSMISSION TYPES AND RATES

 The baseband (single channel per line) protocol combines circuit and packet switching.
 To assure that packets do not arrive out of radar, slots (upto to 5) can be reserved for
synchronous packets.
 Data transmission can be either asynchronous(data) or synchronous(voice).
 Each synchronise channel can support a 64kb/s transfer rate, which is fully adequate for
voice transmissions.
 An synchronous channel can transmit as much as 721kb/s in one direction and 57.6kb/s in
the opposite direction
 It is also possible for an asynchronous connection to support 432.6kb/s in both direction if
the link is symmetric.
BLUETOOTH LOW ENERGY(LE)

 First introduce in Bluetooth version 4.0.

 Design for very low power operation.
 It can transmit data over 40 channel.
 It support data rates from 125kb/s to 2mb/s, multiple power levels from 1mW
to 100mW.
 It multiple network topologies including point to point, broadcast and
networking
BLUETOOTH CLASSIC
 It referred to as Bluetooth basic rate/enhance data rate.
 It can transmit over 79 channel.
 It support data rates from 1mb/s to 3mb/s and support multiple power levels,
from point to point network

Frequency band 2.4Ghz ISM Band 2.4Ghz ISM Band
