C. Assumptions
Th
he ultimate liimit state dessign of reinforrced concretee flexural and
d compression
n members iss
baased on the following
f assuumptions
o Plane sections remain plane
o The reeinforcement is subjected to t the same variations
v in strain
s as the adjacent
a conccrete
o The teensile strength h of the concrete is negleccted
o The maximum compressive strain in the conccrete is taken to be: 0.0035 in bending
(simple or compoun nd) ,0.002 in axial compression ,
o The maximum tenssile strain in th he reinforcemment is taken to be 0.01.
D. Fllexural behavvior
Thhe theory of flexure
f for reinforced conccrete is basedd on certain assumptions,
a to calculate the
t
m
moment resisttance of the beam.
b The comparison is based
b on curvvature of the beam and
m
moment capaccity, the for th
he curvature is given by
Case 1 line OAB,@B through point A
o For un‐cracked beam, the strain is very small, thus the stress distribution is linear, hence
the steel and concrete strains together (in compatible manner). The strain in the
concrete section top fiber is 0 to 0.002

For cracked concrete, the concrete section below neutral axis has no more resist to tension or
the tension resistant of bottom section of the concrete is very small compared to compression
stress at the top zone of the concrete section , hence the following stress and strain curve are
assumed. And the stress distribution is nearly linear (parabolic). The reinforcement starts to
yield at εyd, which is 0.00174.
