Session 20
RPA
Prof Sanjiva Shankar Dubey

Purpose of Automation
 • operational efficiency;  By embracing RPA for processing, •
reduce operational overhead;
 • revenue growth by feeding
data back into product  • reduce data-entry error rates;
development;  • free up employees to do higher value
 • improved customer work;
experiences;  • improve compliance measures;
 • better employee  • reduce wait times; and
experience and retention;
 • reduce fraud leakage.
and
 • a faster path to digital
transformation overall.

What is Robotic Process Automation?

 Robotics Process Automation(RPA) allows organizations to automate task just like a human being was
doing them across application and systems.
 Robotic automation interacts with the existing IT architecture with no complex system integration
required.

Robotic Process Automation

 RPA automates the mundane routine task of the Industry and thus reduces the
workload and cost of operations and also saves time, money, and improves customer
satisfaction.
 Claims Settlement – RPA reduces the claims processes by automating the data collection
process can significantly reduce the average processing time.
 Data Management –RPA automates & simplifies the data management processes
 Insurance: Complex tasks in the insurance industry such as policy management can be
accomplished with RPA (
 Finance: RPA plays an important role in automating fnancial processes. Implementation of RPA
provides effciency and credibility
 Healthcare: Performing tasks such as data entry, patient planning, billing and cash fow by RPA
increases the quality of healthcare
 Telecom: Tasks such as SIM swaps and order issuance are automated with RPA, providing time-
saving, fexibility and scalability
 Manufacturing: RPA replaces FTEs (full-time employees), offering a more effcient and faster
production process (Rutaganda et al. 2017).
 In finance /HR : Automating task such as maintaining queries, responding the task

• RPA operates over the top of

the systems and accesses
them via the presentation
layer
• RPA is about linking, dragging
or dropping icons. Thus, RPA
does not require software
programming expertise.
• Data model or database is not
important for RPA.

RPA a viable alternative

 It learns by watching: the system watches a user perform a task in the GUI and
develops an action list to replicate the task.
 RPA is similar to a graphical user interface testing tool: RPA systems can handle
data like taking timesheets, figuring out what pay should be, and then processing
payroll and making bank transfers.

 RPA bots are easier to implement: They don't require custom software or deep
systems integration. That means companies can add capacity for certain tasks at
low cost.

 They don't work well at scale yet, and they don't always adapt well:
 Unassisted RPA is the next generation: Also called RPA 2.0, the idea is to use
machine learning so that the RPA can do work w

RPA can reduce 30% processing cost and huge time-

consuming by eliminate nonprofitable activities in their
claims processes using

 Quick, smooth distribution channels

 mobile apps instant,
 24/7 chatbots
 better personalized call center experiences
 quick-to-market, modular products.

RPA supports “attended” and “unattended” use

cases
› Attended RPA is defined as:
“Automation that interacts in real time with humans who initiate and
control robot tasks, generally associated with front-office, agent-
led activities.”
› Unattended RPA is defined as:
“Automation that replaces a complete human function in a ‘lights-
out’ manner, creating a virtual workforce, generally associated
with back-office activities.”

 Create a short automated process to collect names from a website entry and
put it in the text file
 Do it as group exercise and submit in the Moodle assignment task

What It Takes to Boost Claims Efficiency

& Revenue Growth with RPA
 Getting leadership buy-in by identifying a C-level automation initiative sponsor
 Using a three-pillar categorization system
 Digital Enterprise,
 Process Automation, which includes end-to-end processes; and
 Task Automation, which is on the individual’s desktop and quicker customer response times
 Creating a diverse crossbusiness team Operations (transformation, change, digital or
operational excellence) and IT together
 Embracing the integration of RPA, machine learning, and AI:
 Establishing a hierarchy of processes to automate
 Enabling RPA to act as a linchpin to connect complex legacy systems
 Identifying who your clients are and what they need

Challenges for RPA introduction

 • Lack of executive sponsorship and buy-in for
top-down initiatives;
 • Lack of strategic vision and long-term strategy
tied to these top initiatives;
 • Siloed operations and executive teams;
 • Limitations from legacy systems and mindsets;
 • Inability to incorporate lessons learned from
first-wave automation; and
 • Inclusion of fragmented automation that, on its
own, doesn’t meet ROI goals.

Learning pause

 Create and account in UI path and automate a simple process.
