CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND IT’S SCOPE
INTRODUCTION
Rationale
Time is an essential, irreconcilable, limited and dynamic resource irrecoverable
because every minute spent is gone forever, limited because only 24 hours exist in a
day, and dynamic because it is never static (Adejo 2012). Time is definitely a usable
commodity that needs to be valued and utilized wisely but often wasted and ignored by
people without knowing its significance in their lives.
Apparently, people are being busy doing these different activities without
considering the time they have spent. Most of them do not even learn how to manage
their time wisely. Time management is such a useful practice for people in order to
accomplish their task conveniently. It is also in the time management that people are
being conscious about the time they have used up. ( Casquejo et. Al 2016).
Time management plays a vital role in the life of every student. It greatly affected
the overall performance or the students in school. Performance is an important factor for
the development of every student. ( Casquejo et. Al 2016).
In the light of the given scenario, the researchers focused the importance to
determine the relationship between the time management and the performance of the
Grade 11 students. Through this study, higher officials in the educational system shall
undertake further improvements and enchantment activities in order to remedy the
wrong practices of the students relative to time management. ( Casquejo et. Al 2016).

LITERATURE BACKGROUND
With the aim to justify the study, the researchers include credible studies and
statements from different authors pertaining to the assessment level of time
management practices and performance of the Grade 11 students.
Time is more precious than gold (Cecelia Ahern). According to Claessens et al.
(2007) , behaviors that aim at achieving on effective use of time while performing certain

directed activities Time does not focus on time itself, rather it emphasizes behaviors that
are goal directed, to be accomplished within a frame of time or through the efficient use
of time.
According to Macan, et al. (2000), the result of the study on “Assessing the
Relationship of Time Management and Academic Performance of the Business
students in Al-Zahra College for women” showed that there is a secret of achieving
success in life is to manage time and resources that everyone possesses equally and
paying sufficient attention to planning. From the study, you must be focused, serious
and have a direction with your plans and dreams in life.
Likewise, according to the case study conducted by Macan (1994) proposed a
time management process model based on an emphasis on task execution
mechanisms (time planning, scheduling) and learning goals, and argued that planning
as a latent variable moderates learning attitudes within learners.
The idea had been supported by another study Of Campbell and Srenson (1992),
time management refers to the way students manage their time in order to have better
academic performance which is invaluable for academic success. Thus, it is important
for students to know the first step of time management i.e. giving priority to the
important matters, and should remain focused on issues essential for success. In line
with notions, Gloe (1999) argued that the techniques of time management are the best
ways to manage course materials successfully. This includes group discussion,
exchanging ideas and sharing views on key points, which ultimately help students to
perform better in the examination leads to superior academic performance.
In addition, according to the case study conducted by Adebayo (2015) entitled
“Time Management and Student’s Academic Performance”, the study showed that there
was significant relationship between time management and student academic
performance. It gives the impression that students need the proper use of time before
they can be effective in their various assignments. All the activities being performed by
students are done within time hence time management cannot be separated from the
academic achievement. Therefore, there is a significant relationship between the two
variables.
A study of Kimiglo and Filz (2008) as cited by Al-Zoubi (2014) conducted a study
which aimed at studying the relation between the academic achievement and time
management skills in Education College at Ghazi University in Turkey. The study
results also showed that the student’s behavior in the field of planning time was at a
high level, in the area of wasting time it was at its lowest. It also showed the existence
of significant positive relationship between planning time and wasting time and between
the academic achievements of students and the medium time management and
academic achievement as well. Therefore, there is really a positive relationship between
time management skills and academic performance of the students.
The idea had been supported by another study of Alrheme and Almardeni (2014)
as cited by Al-Zoubi (2016) wherein they highlighted the students’ viewpoint about how
to time in terms of planning, organizing, directing, and censorship and its effect on
academic achievement. The data were collected through a sample of 300 students. The
study results showed that the planning wis high effect on academic performance proved
by a correlation coefficient. With that, there is a positive relationship between time
management.
THE PROBLEM
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The main thrust of the study is to determine the significant relationship between
Time Management Skills and Academic Performance of Grade 11 students of Loon
South National High School , S.Y. 2022-2023.
Specifically, it seeks to answer the following sub-problems :
1. What is the profile of the Grade 11 students in terms of :
a. Gender
b. Age
c. section
2. What is the level of Time Management Skills among the Grade 11
students?
3. What is the Academic Performance of Grade 11 students?
4. Is there a significant relationship between the level of Time Management
Skills and Academic Performance of Grade 11 students?
5. What intervention program shall be undertaken tess the Time Management
Skills problem among students?
Statement of Hypotheses
Based on the forecited sub-problems, the null hypotheses below are formulated:
1. There is no significant relationship between student’s profile and their academic
performance.
2. There is no significant relationship between the time management skills and
academic performance among Grade 11 students.
Significance of the Study
Since time management is a part of our student’s problem which can do both
positive and negative effects in their academic performances, awareness to this will
benefit the following:
Health Workers. Results of this study will be the guide of health workers to
make steps in countering the effects of time management to students; may it be to
conduct symposia and orientation.
School Administrators. Findings of this study will guide the school
administrators implement intervention programs that will assess student’s time
management skills. Also, they may invite speakers from various dependents to conduct
symposia and orientation about time management.
Teachers. The result of this study will serve as the guide of the teachers to
encourage their students to manage their time properly so that their academic
performance will not get affected.
Guidance Counselor. As comforter and advisor of students, the result of this
study will likely be their guide to come up with a proper advice and measures to be
followed by those students who can’t manage their time properly.
Parents. Since parents are the number one counselor of their children, the
result of this study will help them advice their children to manage their time properly so
that they will not get stress and pressure when a lot of work needs to be done.
Students. The result o National f this study, to some extent, can benefit the
students since they will become aware of the causes of time management, so with its
effects if it can’t be manage properly, and that, they will learn on how to consume their
time by not wasting it.
Future Researchers. This study will serve as the basis and reference of future
researchers who will undergo similar studies about time management skills.
Scope and Limitations
This study is all about the time management skills and it’s relationship with the
academic performance of the grade 11 students of Loon South National High School.
The study solely focuses on the grade 11 students as the target respondents of the
study, which means that this study is utilizing the purposive sampling technique. The
limitation of the study will be the instance of which not all of the target respondents will
be present during the gathering of data, therefore, the researchers will only have to
utilize the existing number of participants.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Environment
Loon South High School of Cuasi, Loon, Bohol serve as the main locale of the
study. The school was established in 2002 and is located at the hilltop part of the
barangay, approximately 300 meters away from the national highway.
Currently the school is having two sites, the old and the new site with
simultaneous classes each. The new site is located at Purok 3 of barangay Cuasi and is
30 meters away from the national highway which was started it’s operation in 2016 to
accommodate the growing population of the school.
Now the school already has total number of population in both campuses
with teachers both in junior and senior high school department.
