Russia's Kalashnikov Concern will unveil a new 7.62mm light machine gun, the RPL-7, at the IDEX 2025 defence exhibition in Abu Dhabi next month, the company said on January 30.

The introduction of the RPL-7 showcases Kalashnikov’s efforts to remain relevant to the evolving requirements of modern armed forces. Still, it continues to face years of copies and cheaper guns on the market from Iran and China, which have reverse-engineered their older models not under licence.

The RPL-7 is designed for use against enemy personnel, light vehicles, and unarmoured targets, forming part of Kalashnikov’s efforts to enhance its support weapon lineup.

The weapon is chambered for 7.62×39mm rounds, including the 1943 model, and is compatible with both steel-core rounds, such as the 57-N-231, and tracer ammunition, like the T-45 and T-45M.

"The RPL-7 can be equipped with a range of attachments, including optical and night sights, laser designators, flashlights, and other accessories, allowing for adaptability across different operational scenarios," Kalashnikov said.

A key feature of the RPL-7 is its ambidextrous operation, enabling users to fire with either hand for greater battlefield versatility. The machine gun is equipped with a detachable bipod, forward grip, ammunition belt, and cartridge boxes, along with a carrying sling.

Kalashnikov said the weapon is intended to meet the needs of support units and provide a reliable solution in diverse combat environments.

With an effective range of up to 800 metres, a weight of approximately 5.5 kg (excluding accessories), and a total length of 1,100 mm in firing position, the RPL-7 is designed to be a lightweight, manoeuvrable system. Its ammunition box holds up to 80 rounds, offering sustained fire capabilities for support operations.

The company said the weapon is designed for multi-role effectiveness and is suited for fast-moving combat scenarios where mobility and rapid response are crucial.

Further details on the RPL-7’s operational performance are expected following its official unveiling at IDEX 2025.
