How Brittany Mahomes’ forgotten soccer journey became the foundation for her mission with Kansas City Current

Brittany Mahomes is known around Kansas City for much more than being Patrick Mahomes’ wife. Long before NFL fame and celebrity friendships expanded her public profile, she was a competitive soccer player with a sharp eye for goal. That playing background now shapes her work with the Kansas City Current, where her experience, business instincts and growing platform have helped strengthen the profile of women’s soccer.

Brittany Mahomes’ soccer career shaped her role with Kansas City Current

Mahomes’ connection to soccer began long before she entered the world of professional sports ownership. Growing up in Tyler, Texas, she tried several sports before choosing soccer as her main focus during high school.

At the University of Texas at Tyler, she developed into one of the program’s most productive players. She finished her college career with 31 goals and 16 assists, helping the team post a 56-13-5 record across four seasons. Her senior year stood out, with Mahomes becoming the first player in program history to record three hat tricks.

Her former coach, Stefani Webb, remembers the competitive edge that made Mahomes stand out.

“You look at exceptional athletes, and they love the pressure of that moment. They love the pressure of, ‘Can I do it or can I not?’ and she wanted that,” Webb said. “She always stood up to the test. I mean, she was an incredible goal scorer for us and leader on the field.”

Mahomes later played professionally in Iceland, joining UMF Afturelding Fram in 2017. The experience also helped her understand the demands of making soccer a full-time career. After one season, she chose a different path and turned her attention toward fitness and helping others.

That decision did not end her connection to soccer. Instead, it gave her a new way to influence the sport.

How Brittany Mahomes uses her platform to support women’s soccer

When Chris and Angie Long were building the Kansas City Current, Mahomes became part of the ownership group. Her value went beyond her famous last name. She understood what athletes experience because she had been one herself.

Chris Long emphasized that perspective when discussing her contribution to the club.

“She grasps what the players are going through,” he said, “and that’s been very helpful from a managerial standpoint to get her feedback, as everything we do at the end of the day is a player-centric decision. So, it’s pretty important to have her input there.”

Mahomes also played a role in shaping the Current’s brand and merchandising strategy. Her influence grew further when Patrick Mahomes officially joined the ownership group, bringing another major NFL platform to the club.

For Stefani Webb, seeing her former player reach this point has been especially meaningful.

“I often say to our coaches or players that you have a platform. No matter if it’s a little or a big one, it’s what you do with that platform that changes lives, and Brittany has been given a massive platform now,” Webb said. “For her to use that platform to change women’s sports in America is pretty impressive.

“I’ve been one of her biggest fans for using that platform not just for the good of Kansas City, but for women’s soccer across the world. You know, she’s setting a new standard, and I couldn’t be more proud of her.”

That evolution is perhaps the most interesting part of Mahomes’ story. She did not simply leave soccer behind when she stopped playing. She moved from scoring goals to helping build the stage on which the next generation can score theirs.
