Meerut/Bareilly: Ram Sevak, the former Faridpur inspector, who was accused of accepting bribes for releasing drug traffickers and escaping during an SP city raid by scaling the police station wall, presented himself before a special court in "poor health" on Wednesday.
The court granted his interim bail petition and scheduled the next hearing for Feb 5. His legal representative filed both regular and interim bail applications.
SP city Manush Parik's team conducted a raid at inspector's quarters, where they discovered significant cash holdings. Subsequently, an FIR was registered at Faridpur police station against the then-inspector. After five months of legal proceedings, he secured bail.
The charges against him include arresting two men, Alam and Niyaz Ahmed from Navdiya Ashok, for smuggling and subsequently releasing them after accepting Rs 7 lakh as bribe. Following confidential information, the SSP directed the SP and CO to search the inspector's residence, leading to the discovery of over Rs 9 lakh.
SSP (Bareilly) Anurag Arya said, "A tip-off was received earlier that the station in-charge arrested two suspects on NDPS charges. He brought them to the police station and took Rs 7 lakh for their release. About Rs 9 lakh in cash was recovered from the room. The inspector was suspended and efforts are on to arrest him."
