Which private companies do US funds hold?

On their latest SEC filings, 542 US mutual funds, ETFs and closed-end funds held shares of 416 private companies held by two funds or more, worth $61.6 billion in all, as the funds value them. The most widely held is Anthropic: 120 funds, $17.8 billion.

Ranked by the number of funds holding each, then by the value they hold. The 100 most widely held are listed here; all 416 are in the list's file.

How are these holdings found?

A holding is a fund's common or preferred share of a company that is not listed: valued with unobservable inputs (fair value level 3) and placed privately (a restricted security, or PP in its title), never a right left from a takeover, an escrow, or a vehicle that holds such shares. Once two funds hold a company that way, a level 3 preferred share of it counts without the mark, and so does any level 3 share of a company whose names the site joins by hand, such as OpenAI and Anthropic, as some funds file them. A company that funds hold as a listed share in the same data set is public and left out. Rows are joined into a company by its name, its share class and legal form cut off. A fund is its series, or its registrant when it files without one, as closed-end and interval funds do. A fund that holds a vehicle naming the company it is invested in is listed apart and never counted among the funds holding the company. Each fund values its shares itself, every quarter, so two funds can value one share differently.

The holdings are each fund's latest public Form N-PORT, which a fund files for the last month of each of its fiscal quarters and the SEC publishes 60 days later. A company's page lists every fund holding it, the value and the number of shares it reported, the value per share that gives, and the security as the fund titled it, with a link to the filing on EDGAR.
