Domain availability checker: is that name taken?

Version 1.2.0

Enter a full domain name, such as example.com, to ask its registry whether the name is registered. If no registration is found, check the price at a registrar before you plan around it.

How to read the result

ResultWhat it means
RegisteredSomeone holds the name. The registrar, registration date, and expiry date appear when published.
No registration foundThe registry has no record of the name. It's promising, but you may still not be able to buy it.
Cannot determineThe ending has no public lookup service, or the registry didn't answer. This says nothing about the name.

quietlanternstudio, checked on 9 October 2026

Example

quietlanternstudio.com is Registered, since 6 October 2025. quietlanternstudio.io shows No registration found.

To try one name across several endings at once, use the multi-TLD availability checker.

If no registration is found, can I buy the domain?

Not always. The registry has no record of the name, but a registrar may still refuse the sale or charge far more than usual.

  • Reserved: the registry holds the name back and won't sell it. Which names depends on the ending.
  • Premium: the registry prices the name well above the normal fee. The registration record never shows price.
  • Restricted: some endings only sell to eligible buyers, such as residents of a country or licensed businesses.
  • Just taken: someone may register the name between your check and your checkout.

A registrar's search shows the price and whether you can buy it. Treat this result as a first filter.

Why not just visit the website to check?

Because a site that doesn't load can still be registered. Many registered names have no website, or no nameservers at all, so the browser can't reach anything. The registry is the only place that knows whether a name is held. To see what DNS answers for a name, use the DNS lookup.

Is it safe to check a domain name here?

The name goes from stack127 to the registry. A registrar is only asked when the name is already registered, and then it's the one that holds it. Saved answers are stored by name, not linked to you. A Registered answer can be up to 24 hours old and a No registration found answer up to 1 hour old, so check the fetched time before you buy.

What if the name is already taken?

Look at the expiry date and any status shown with it. A name past its expiry may come free, but the owner can often still renew or restore it. The domain expiry checker explains each stage. For the full record, use the domain registration lookup.

A registered name may be in use, saved for later, or for sale. This lookup can't tell you which, or the price.
