Greenland
The world’s largest island is 80 percent ice sheet, wrapped in fjords that calve icebergs the size of buildings. There are no roads between towns, so you travel by boat, helicopter or small plane, and the reward is Arctic scenery on a scale nothing else matches.
Greenland is a splurge that earns it. Give it eight days or more, base yourself around the ice, and accept that weather, not your plan, sets the schedule.

At a glance
- Nature and adventure both score 95, the top of this guide. Ilulissat’s calving glacier and the fjords behind it are the reason to come, and they deliver.
- This is expensive travel. Budget around $150 a day backpacking and $300 mid-range, with flights and boat transfers on top. Budget-friendly scores just 15.
- June through August is the window: long daylight, open water and the summer boat schedule. Winter swaps that for northern lights and dog-sled season.
- Getting anywhere means flying or sailing between towns. Five days sees Ilulissat and the icefjord; eight lets you add Disko Bay or the capital without rushing.
- The catch: fog and wind cancel flights and boats with no notice. Build slack days into any itinerary, and never book a tight connection out of the country.

What Greenland does best, and where it doesn’t
Ten categories scored 0 to 100 from tourism data, traveler reports and on-the-ground experience.
Nature and adventure tie at the top, and no place packs more raw Arctic scenery into a boat ride. Icebergs, whales and glaciers are the whole point, and they overdeliver.
Nothing here is cheap and nothing is quick. Towns connect only by air or sea, prices run high, and weather can strand you for a day, so plan loose and bring a buffer.

Why Greenland works
Scale is the whole draw. The island is bigger than Alaska and California combined, four-fifths of it buried under an ice sheet up to two miles thick, and the coast is a maze of fjords that calve icebergs the size of city blocks.
Because there are no roads between towns, every trip is an expedition in miniature: boat rides past glaciers, small planes over the ice cap, and whales feeding a short sail from your hotel. Ilulissat and its icefjord anchor most first visits.
Honest downsides
- It is genuinely expensive. Flights, hotels and boat tours all run high, and there is no budget shortcut
- Weather rules everything. Fog and wind cancel flights and boats with no notice, so plans stay loose
- No roads connect towns. Every hop between places means a flight, helicopter or boat you have to book ahead
- Short season. The full range of boat tours and open water runs June through August only
Getting there
There are no direct flights from the US. The two routes in are via Copenhagen in Denmark or via Reykjavik in Iceland, both feeding Air Greenland and Icelandair services to Nuuk and Ilulissat.
A new international runway at Nuuk, opened in 2024, has widened the options, but connections still hinge on the weather. Pairing Greenland with a few days in Iceland is the common and sensible way to structure the trip.
Frequently asked questions
Do US citizens need a visa for Greenland?
No visa for tourism. Greenland follows Schengen entry rules, so US citizens can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The ETIAS travel authorization, a quick online pre-approval, is expected to become mandatory at some point during 2026, so check before you fly.
How much does Greenland cost per day?
Budget around $150 per person per day backpacking, and closer to $300 mid-range, with hotels and guided tours. Comfort travel runs $700 and up. Flights and boat transfers between towns sit on top of those daily figures, so the total climbs fast.
When is the best time to visit Greenland?
June through August is the main window, with long daylight, open water and the full summer boat schedule for icefjord tours and whale watching. February to April is the northern-lights and dog-sledding season, with solid sea ice but short, cold days.
How do you get to Greenland?
There are no direct flights from the US. You connect through Copenhagen in Denmark or Reykjavik in Iceland, flying Air Greenland or Icelandair into Nuuk or Ilulissat. Many travelers pair the trip with a few days in Iceland on the way.
Is Greenland safe for travelers?
Yes. Greenland is very safe, with a safety score of 90 in this guide. Crime against visitors is rare. The real risks are environmental: cold, unpredictable weather and remote terrain, so follow local guides on the water and on the ice.
How many days do you need in Greenland?
Five days is enough to fly into Ilulissat and see the icefjord, take a couple of boat tours and hike the boardwalks. Eight to ten days lets you add Disko Bay or the capital, Nuuk, with buffer days for the weather delays that come with the territory.
