mise dotfiles track

Track a file or directory in place

Adds a [dotfiles] entry with mode = "track" to your global config: the file stays where it is, nothing is copied or linked, and mise saves a checkpoint of it right away. While the watcher service runs, later edits are saved automatically; without it, mise dot save saves them. Use --dry-run to see what a large directory would add before tracking it.

--os and --profile declare a variant: machines that match the platform or config environment keep their own version of the file, so a Mac and a Linux machine can have different contents at the same path. --machine gives every machine its own version instead, for files such as a monitor layout that should never be applied on another machine.

See https://mise.jdx.dev/dotfiles/history.html

Arguments

  • <PATH>… — Paths to track (absolute or starting with ~/)

Flags

  • --os <OS> — Declare a variant for this platform (macos, linux, linux/arm64, …)
  • --profile <PROFILE> — Declare a variant for this config environment (MISE_ENV or -E)
  • --local — Keep this file's history on this machine only; it is never shared
  • --machine — Keep a separate stream on every machine, never applied on another
  • --no-autosave — Save only on mise dot save <path>, never automatically
  • --encrypt — Encrypt contents before saving them to history (requires [history.encryption] recipients)
  • --allow-plaintext — Save an explicitly tracked credential-named file in plaintext
  • -y --yes — Accepted for compatibility; track no longer asks to confirm the paths
  • -n --dry-run — Show what each path expands to (files, size, what is left out) without tracking it
  • -h --help — Print help

Examples

Track a file and a directory

mise dot track ~/.zshrc ~/.config/hypr

Show what tracking a directory would save

mise dot track --dry-run ~/.codex

Keep a separate version for macOS machines

mise dot track ~/.zshrc --os macos

Keep a separate version on every machine

mise dot track ~/.config/hypr/monitors.lua --machine

Keep the file's history on this machine only

mise dot track ~/.config/app/state.json --local

Encrypt the file before saving it

mise dot track ~/.config/app/credentials --encrypt

Save the file only when you run mise dot save

mise dot track ~/.config/app/state.json --no-autosave
