How Can I Edit an Existing Floor Plan Image?

Upload a PNG or JPEG, add notes locally, or request an AI revision of the image. FloorPlanBot accepts files up to 8 MB. Export a page from PDF or CAD to an image first; retain the source file for measurements and later architectural editing.

“I only want to change one part.”

Draw a rectangular selection around that part and request a focused edit. For a selected-area edit, the editor composites the result back into the original image outside the rectangle. Choose the boundary carefully: objects crossing it can be cut or leave a seam. This preserves outside pixels, not the correctness of the edited area.

“I need editable lines, not just a picture.”

Review detected straight-line candidates, add or remove lines, then calibrate against a known length before DXF export. This produces reviewed linework, not automatic walls, doors or BIM objects. See the scale and export guide.

How to Edit a Floor Plan

  1. Open the reference. Use a clear, upright PNG or JPEG with readable walls and labels. A screenshot with no reliable dimension is a visual reference, not a measurement source.
  2. Choose the kind of change. Add a note for review, rename a schematic template room, or select a region for an AI image edit. A note saying “move this wall” does not move its geometry.
  3. Write one specific request. For example:
In the selected living-room area, change the sofa upholstery to blue. Keep its position and shape. Keep all room names, doors and wall lines unchanged.

AI revisions require Google sign-in and 1 credit per delivered image. Compare the result with the source, save the preferred version and export it. For a supported coordinate-based apartment plan, use the measured layout planner instead of asking an image model to enforce dimensions.

KNOW WHAT CHANGES

What You Can Change

Room names and project notes

Update a schematic label to match how you intend to use the space: a guest room can become an office, or a spare area can be marked as storage. Add notes about priorities, uncertainties, and alternate arrangements. Labels describe your proposal; renaming a bedroom does not verify that it meets requirements for that use.

Dimension labels and image linework

Record measurements in a consistent unit system. On images, use reviewed line candidates or manual tracing and scale calibration when preparing linework. Check each segment against the reference rather than assuming every detected edge is a wall. Furniture outlines, text, and scan artifacts can look like building lines.

AI layout revisions

Sign in to request an AI change to an image. State the desired outcome and what should remain, for example “explore an open kitchen while keeping the exterior outline.” Compare the result with the original. The model may alter proportions or adjacent details, so a revision is a new concept to review rather than a guaranteed precise geometry edit.

Walls and door positions

You can annotate a proposed wall or door change and use AI to explore its appearance. For a photograph of an existing interior, use AI room design to compare furnishings and finishes. To coordinate the visual direction across several rooms, explore AI home design. Direct wall dragging, automatic door placement, structural checks, and CAD object recognition are not currently provided. Record these changes clearly for the professional who will develop the measured drawing.

Export Formats: PNG, PDF & DXF

PNG for quick visual feedback

A PNG preserves the visible image and annotations for messages, project boards, and on-screen review. Open the downloaded image once before sending it to ensure the relevant area is included. Include a separate note identifying any dimensions that remain approximate.

PDF for a review document

Use PDF when the recipient wants a convenient document to view or print. Printing settings can resize a page, so do not measure a printed concept with a ruler unless you have independently checked the scale. Keep written dimensions as the reference and mark the drawing as a concept.

Schematic DXF for supported linework

The floor plan editor exports template boundary lines and text, or image linework that you have reviewed and calibrated. A raster picture does not become a complete architectural model simply by choosing DXF. Walls, doors, windows, layers, and other CAD semantics may need reconstruction and verification in specialist software.

For a visual presentation instead of linework, try floor plan rendering. Its 3D-style images help communicate an idea while the editor remains useful for recording practical feedback.

Floor Plan Editor FAQ

Can I edit a floor plan online for free?

Yes. Local annotation, template editing and supported exports do not require a subscription. AI image edits require Google sign-in and credits; new accounts receive 3 free credits, subject to capacity limits.

Can I upload PDF, DWG or DXF directly?

No. The image editor accepts PNG and JPEG up to 8 MB. Export your selected page or CAD view as an image first. The exported picture loses the source document’s editable objects and layers.

How do I keep everything outside an edit unchanged?

Use a rectangular selection in the image editor. The application keeps the original pixels outside that rectangle when composing the selected-area result. Without a selection, the AI can revise the full image. An object crossing the selection boundary still needs visual review.

Can I change dimensions by typing a note on the image?

No. An annotation is text on a picture; it does not resize the underlying rooms. Use calibration for reviewed image linework, or the measured planner for supported numerical geometry changes.

How do I convert a floor plan image to DXF?

Review or trace the straight lines, calibrate with a reliable known distance, and check another dimension before exporting. The DXF contains that reviewed linework. It does not automatically recover the original CAD layers or identify structural walls and door objects.

Can I save and return to my edits?

Yes. Sign in to save supported projects and access completed AI history. Keep a downloaded copy for sharing. A locally opened image or unsaved browser preview is not a durable project archive.
