    Technical knowledge evolves when experience is shared. DHI´s FEFLOW International User Conference 2026 is a valuable opportunity for groundwater professionals to go beyond software updates. For professionals working with groundwater modeling, keeping up with new approaches, practical applications and the evolution of modeling tools is an important part of addressing increasingly complex subsurface challenges. After nearly three decades working with FEFLOW, Dr. Nilson Guiguer has seen both the software and the groundwater modeling community evolve. A FEFLOW user since 1996, and as the person responsible for bringing it from Germany to the world, Dr. Guiguer brings a long-term perspective on how knowledge sharing, technical exchange and advances in modeling tools contribute to solving increasingly complex subsurface challenges.   • The City of Surrey relies on the Nicomekl River Sea Dam to protect low‑lying agricultural lands from tidal flooding and saltwater intrusion. Built more than 100 years ago, the structure no longer meets modern structural, seismic or flood protection standards, particularly as sea levels continue to rise. To address this, the City began planning for a replacement water control structure capable of managing river flows, tides, storm surge and salinity intrusion under future climate conditions, while also improving ecological connectivity and meeting regulatory requirements. DHI supported this work through advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and 3D salinity modelling. Jonas Brandi Mortensen, my host in KK, mentored me with solving the technical difficulties of a potential project. Now I am confident to go back to the client and convert this opportunity into a project. Beyond the office, I experienced Sabah's rich culture and stunning natural landscapes, from Mount Kinabalu to the mangroves, while enjoying the local cuisine and unforgettable sunsets. Seeing degraded inland and coastal waters during my visit was also a powerful reminder of the environmental challenges associated with urbanisation and tourism development, and the important role DHI can play in supporting better water sustainability.   • When tackling plastic pollution in rivers, one question that really matters is: ‘𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘 𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙢𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙙𝙤𝙬𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙢 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙘𝙚𝙖𝙣?' It may seem like a simple question, but the answer has implications for how we monitor rivers, plan clean-up operations and invest in pollution prevention. A recent study, ‘𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵: 𝘓𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘨𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨’, published in 𝘌𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘗𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, is the result of DHI’s collaboration with The Ocean Cleanup to better understand how plastics move through river systems. The research draws on observations and modelling across three rivers with very different hydrological and tidal characteristics: the Rio Ozama (Dominican Republic), Umgeni (South Africa) and Chao Phraya (Thailand). For many of our early-career colleagues, YWPDK provides a valuable opportunity to connect with peers across the water sector, exchange knowledge and build professional relationships. ‘Water is at the heart of many environmental challenges and of DHI's work. At DHI, I focus on understanding how nutrients, pollutants and other pressures affect ecosystems, using data and modelling to support better environmental management. YWPDK is valuable in bringing together young professionals across the Danish water sector to share knowledge, ideas and build collaborations,’ says Xin Huei Wong, Environmental Engineer in DHI's Marine & Coastal department. DHI also sees the partnership as an important way to help strengthen the future of the water sector. ‘DHI actively supports YWPDK through national and international events, workshops and knowledge-sharing activities. As tunnel immersion progresses in The Fehmarnbelt Project in Denmark, DHI’s Marine and Coastal team is supporting the project by completing spill monitoring campaigns using our autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). Several campaigns have already taken place, with more planned to follow. Equipped with both optical and acoustic instruments, the AUV has carried out submerged missions close to dredging and specialised vessels used in the project, providing data to assess whether sediment flux is present and, where detected, to quantify it. Kristian Maar, Marine Survey Specialist, explains:  ‘The AUV allows us to take measurements in areas that would otherwise not be easily accessible by boat, which is crucial during the immersion phase of the Fehmarnbelt project. Currently, it measures turbidity and acoustic backscatter, but it can readily be reconfigured to carry additional sensors depending on the task.’ In close collaboration, DHI and Femern A/S have been working together since the early days of the Fehmarnbelt project, developing a comprehensive range of environmental studies and monitoring starting with the initial feasibility assessments in the mid-1990s.   • Earlier, Søuld shared insights [https://lnkd.in/gjS7vUPc] from their biodiversity analysis of eelgrass collection activities along the Danish coast. DHI supported this work by evaluating current washed-up eelgrass harvesting practices against baseline hydrodynamic, biogeochemical and environmental conditions, and assessing potential environmental and biodiversity impacts. The focus was on whether the practices could affect biodiversity, climate and the environment beyond direct physical disturbance, including potential effects to nutrient removal and CO2 sequestration.   The assessment combined field observations and existing environmental datasets from a marine ecosystem model used in the Danish river basin management plans with prior numerical analyses using MIKE 3 and MIKE ECO Lab. The exchange was memorable, offering the opportunity to live and work abroad for a few months while learning from talented experts in our Italy office. What I was most looking forward to was finally meeting in person the colleagues I had been working with remotely. I was also eager to immerse myself in the local culture, from enjoying authentic Italian food (and wine!). Adding an unexpected twist to the journey, the conflict in the Middle East escalated just before my departure, causing significant flight disruptions. Navigating the uncertainty, exploring alternative routes and adapting plans at short notice was unforgettable. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄, 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆? It was eye-opening to learn about the hydrodynamic conditions in another part of the world. Compared to the Mediterranean Sea and many other regions, Singapore generally experiences more sheltered wave conditions, which can lead to different engineering considerations and design assumptions. I enjoyed learning from our colleague about the various names and directions of the local winds in Italy. Another fun fact I learned during the exchange was that the deepest part of Lake Como is actually deeper than the Singapore Strait! Experiences like these broadened my perspective on both the technical and environmental diversity of water systems around the world, while reinforcing the importance of understanding local conditions in our works. 𝗪𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗜𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? Working on climate adaptation projects in Singapore, I had always wanted to visit Venice, a world-renowned example of coastal resilience. And I finally did! During the trip, a local asked me, ‘What do you do?’ I felt proud to share that I work for a company that contributed to the MOSE flood barrier system, including providing 24/7 operational forecasting support. It was especially meaningful because I just had lunch with the lead modeller behind the system not long ago!
