The world is changing. We see this every day in our work with our clients. Change is challenging, but it’s also stimulating. Whether it’s supply chains under pressure, game-changing technology or the intensifying impacts of climate change, our clients are facing profound challenges - and the opportunity to renew and expand. In our Arup Annual Report for FY2023/24, we summarise our performance during our last financial year and how we are changing, too. Our group chair, Jerome Frost, discusses what lies ahead and how our commitment to our clients allows us to shape a better world. #WeAreArup #ArupAnnualReport Link to the report: https://lnkd.in/e-ze48em

How do you design a new office tower on top of a car park? The design of Western Australia’s first timber-hybrid office tower, WS2, saw our experts collaborating with GDI Property Group to develop a lightweight timber-hybrid structure, enabling 12 storeys to be built above an existing five-storey car park. Our approach has set a new benchmark for sustainable building design, achieving a 70% reduction in embodied carbon compared to traditional reinforced concrete approaches. Notable design features include in-floor dampers to control the lightweight structure’s vibration and the use of spare capacity from a neighbouring building's plant room. We’re helping to protect Cork’s homes and communities from flood risk. In partnership with Cork County Council and the Office of Public Works, we developed a flood resilience scheme for Douglas and Togher, areas frequently affected by severe flooding. Through close consultation with local communities, we designed interventions that integrate flood defences with public realm enhancements. By enhancing the landscape along the watercourse, the scheme has delivered safer roads, shared cycleways, wider walkways, reprofiled riverbanks and an upgraded park. This scheme not only strengthens flood protection but also creates people centred public spaces that support community wellbeing and cater to the diverse needs of Cork’s residents. The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) will improve rail services for millions of people in Northern England who travel between Manchester and York. As part of the TRU West Alliance, we are creating faster and more reliable journeys with four new express trains to be added to the route, along with 15 freight trains. The upgrade will improve and enhance over 122 kilometres (70 miles) of track, 65 bridges, six tunnels and 12 stations – strengthening this infrastructure for the future. Electrifying the route will support the UK Government's net zero targets, reducing operational carbon emissions by up to 87,000 tonnes of CO²e annually.
