Who it's for

It suits social media managers, marketers, marketplace sellers, and bloggers, or anyone who needs a caption on a photo without installing software.

Add text to a photo so it stays readable

Most captions that fail sit on a busy part of the picture, where the letters dissolve into whatever is behind them. An outline in the opposite color draws a hard edge around every letter, which is why white text with a thin dark outline works on nearly any photograph. A shadow is the softer version and helps most over mid-tone areas such as skin or sky. For a detailed background like foliage or a crowd, put a semi-transparent plate behind the text; it's the blunt instrument, and it works. Opacity, alignment and font size are set per layer, so a heading and a small photo credit can look different on the same image.

Pick the canvas size before you type

The canvas can keep the photo's own dimensions, take a size you type in, or use one of the ready presets: Instagram Stories at 1080 by 1920, an Instagram post at 1080 by 1080, a YouTube cover at 1280 by 720. Choose it first, because the text is positioned relative to the canvas and changing the size afterwards moves the caption. If your source photo is the wrong shape for the target, crop it to that aspect ratio with our image cropper before you start, and resize an oversized picture with the image resizer so the file that comes out is not four times heavier than it needs to be. You can also skip the photo entirely and put the text on one of the solid background colors.

Text over the photo, or text inside the scene

This editor lays text over the picture on a flat canvas and saves it as PNG or JPG at the canvas size you set. Text that has to live inside the scene, in perspective on a wall or printed on a package, needs generating instead, which the AI modes on Azurade AI do on the paid side of the site.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add text to a photo online?+

Upload the photo, type into the text field, then set the font, size and color. Drag the caption straight onto the spot you want it on the canvas and download the result as PNG or JPG. You do not need an account, and the download has no watermark.

How do I keep the caption readable over a busy photo?+

Use an outline in the opposite color, a shadow, or a semi-transparent plate behind the text, roughly in that order as the photo gets busier. White text with a thin dark outline survives almost any picture.

Can I put more than one caption on the same image?+

Yes. Each caption is its own layer with its own font, size, color, alignment and effects, and you can duplicate a layer to keep the styling and change only the words. Layers are listed under the canvas so you can edit one without disturbing the others.

Which fonts are available?+

Thirteen: Roboto, Open Sans, Montserrat, Oswald, PT Sans, PT Serif, Playfair Display, Raleway and Nunito are loaded for the page, alongside Arial, Georgia, Times New Roman and Courier New from your own system. Oswald and Montserrat hold up best at poster sizes.

Should I download as PNG or JPG?+

PNG for flat color, logos, screenshots and any caption with hard edges, because nothing is thrown away. JPG for a photograph, where the file lands several times smaller and the difference is invisible. Both are written at the canvas size you picked.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?+

No. The image is drawn onto a canvas inside your browser and the finished file is written there too, so an unreleased product shot or a family picture never reaches a server. Close the tab and it is gone.
