Bloomberg: iOS 18.3 added Starlink support on iPhones.

According to Bloomberg and user reports, T-Mobile’s list of eligible devices for beta testing Starlink direct-to-cell connections now includes iPhones. While only a few Samsung Galaxy devices were supported at first, now iPhone owners with the most recent update can reportedly connect, as well as some people with Android 15 devices.

That gives those owners an alternative to Apple’s Globalstar-connected service while off the grid that works without pointing their phone at the sky first.

Apple and Google were reportedly worried that Character.ai’s app was inappropriate for teens.

Before Google hired away Character.ai’s leadership, both Google and Apple issued warnings to the startup that prompted it to introduce stronger content filters and increase its age rating to 17+ on the App Store, according to a report from The Information.

Character.ai employees also reportedly raised concerns internally about the app’s impact on teen mental health, something it’s currently facing two lawsuits over.

You can log into multiple WhatsApp accounts on one iOS device in a recent iOS beta version, writes WABetaInfo.

In the case of Android phones, which have had the feature since 2023, you need a multi-SIM card phone and a second phone number to register another account.

68 percent of all iPhones are already on iOS 18.

And 76 percent of iPhone introduced in the last four years are on it, too, according to Apple’s iOS adoption stats that were spotted by 9to5Mac. The figures, from Apple, are “As measured by devices that transacted on the App Store on January 21, 2025.”

A 3D scan captured by an iPhone helped recreate a 50-year-old Atari arcade machine.

Atari’s Space Race debuted in 1973 with a limited number of arcade machines featuring a futuristic fiberglass cabinet design.

They’re now hard to come by, so the Retro Collective recreated one from scratch using a crude 3D iPhone scan of an original unit that was refined, 3D-printed, and assembled like a giant retro gaming puzzle with some added electronics.

This Mac Mini Kensington security lock makes sure it can’t escape.

The impressively small Mac Mini doesn’t include a slot for cable locks, so Kensington’s solution to prevent it from getting stolen from schools, offices, and other shared spaces is a new $69.95 secure steel cage.

The Kensington Security Mount for Mac Mini also doubles as a mounting solution, allowing the desktop to be installed out of sight for added security.

Here’s another use for that Thread radio in your iPhone.

In an interview with The Verge, Vividh Siddha, director of engineering at Apple and president of Thread Group, shared another use case for the Thread radio in newer iPhones.

As well as allowing setup of a Thread device when you don’t have a Thread border router, the Thread radio in the iPhone lets you control devices when the power is out:

But the other important factor is the ability to use your accessories, and some important ones, like your front door lock when there’s a power outage. If you have no infrastructure — your Wi-Fi router is down, your Thread border router is down — and you still want the ability to get into your house or do other things that might be smart home related. Those are some use cases that it’s explicitly designed for, but it’s not limited to that.

Unintelligent Apple.

Siri still sucks, despite Apple blowharding about its AI advances and ChatGPT integration. Just read this damning and hilarious report over at One Foot Tsunami for the latest evidence:

With the absolute most charitable interpretation, Siri correctly provided the winner of just 20 of the 58 Super Bowls that have been played.

Inexplicably, for this one lone Super Bowl, Siri offered to search the web or use ChatGPT instead of just answering a question it should absolutely know.

Dbrand says it’s replaced all of the Ghost Cases with Ghost Case 2.0.

Dbrand said in November 2023 it would freely replace purchases of the Ghost Case, a clear smartphone case it claims will never yellow, but which was overly scratch-prone when released.

After manufacturing delays, Dbrand emailed The Verge to say it’s finally sent replacements to customers, who seem to be pleased with the results so far.

Apple’s iOS 18.3 update is almost ready.

Apple is rolling out the release candidate beta build of iOS 18.3, meaning a wider release for everyone is likely days away. Among other tweaks, this update aims to make it more obvious when Apple Intelligence is summarizing your notifications — and that those summaries can contain errors.

Apple is number three in China’s smartphone market for Q4.

Maybe it’s the lack of Apple Intelligence in China, or maybe it’s the Mate 70 series’ performance.

Either way, MacRumors points out these Counterpoint Research stats showing iPhone sales in China put it in third place in Q4, behind both Huawei and Oppo (which includes OnePlus), and fourth place for the full year, despite its second-place finish globally.

The leak also includes a post that appears to show parts of URLs about the upcoming products. The products include an “iPhone SE (4th Gen),” a new 11th-generation base iPad, and 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Airs with M3 chips.
