BRIDGE COURSE

beams – support reactions

.
Beams

Beams are structural members that resist loads generally applied in the
transverse direction and transmit them to the foundation through
columns
Types of Supports
Beams are supported at the ends on different types of supports
Roller support
It permits translation along direction of roller and rotation about the axis but prevents
translation perpendicular to the roller.
Hence, one reaction force which is perpendicular to the direction of roller
Roller supports are commonly located at one end of long bridges.
This allows the bridge structure to expand and contract with temperature changes.
Roller supports can also take the form of rubber bearings, rockers, or a set of gears
which are designed to allow a limited amount of lateral movement
Hinged support / Pinned support
It permits rotation only and prevents
all translation.
Hence, two reactions – one force
parallel to the hinge and one
perpendicular to the hinge

Simple support
•Beam is simply placed above the wall.
•It is idealized as a frictionless surface.
•It is not commonly used
Fixed support
It is a rigid joint and permits no translation or rotation.
Hence, three reactions – one force parallel to the
support, one force perpendicular to the support and
one restraining moment
Welded joints in steel structures can be considered as
fixed
Cast in place concrete structures can also be
considered rigid
Types of Beams
Cantilever beam
One end of the beam is fixed and the other end is free
Example beams in balcony, verandah, etc.

Simply supported beam

One end is hinged support and other end is roller
support
Fixed beam
Both ends of the beam are fixed

Overhanging beam
Beam that has one or both ends extending
beyond the supports – overhang
Singly overhanging or doubly overhanging
Continuous beam
Beam which is continuous over more than
one span

Propped Cantilever beam

One end is fixed and other end has a simple
support
Types of Loads
Concentrated loads
Idealized load which acts at a single point

Uniformly distributed loading

Type of load which is uniformly distributed
over a certain length

Uniformly varying load/ Triangular load

Type of load which is varying from zero to a
particular value and spread over a certain
length of the beam
