Installers Preparation and OS
Installation Procedures
• Every Computer requires an Installation (or setup) of a
computer program (including device drivers and
plugins) for making its programs ready for execution.
Installation is the particular configuration of a software
or hardware with a view to making it usable with the
computer. A soft or digital copy of the piece of
software (program) is needed to install in a specific
Operating System.
Installers Preparation and OS
Installation Procedures
• Boot Device - Devices inside the computer where a user can select to boot from
• Bootable - containing the software required to boot a computer
• Compressed - squeeze data and files altogether
• Configuration - arrangement and settings of a computer system
• Executable - program understood by an operating system of a computer and makes the computer perform
a particular task.
• Extract - describe the process of decompressing and moving one or more files in a compressed file
• Firewall - software utility or hardware device that acts as a filter for data entering or leaving a network or
computer.
• ISO file - computer file that contains the complete contents of a CD, DVD, or other disc or disk
• Portable Application - software product designed to be easily moved from one computing environment
to another.
• Rufus - program used for creating bootable USB flash drives
INSTALLER
• An installer is a piece of software that is used to
install software programs on a system. Installers
simplify the process of installing software by
providing the user a step-by-step process with the
ability to select the desired options (Computer
Hope, 2017)
TYPES OF SOFTWARE INTALLATION
• Media - based software installation - This is the
most common type of installation. It will take all of
the files that make up your software and place them
onto a span of disks. It will contain some form of
an executable to call the process as well.
TYPES OF SOFTWARE INTALLATION
• Web - based software installation - This is a pretty cool
way to deploy software that has been picking up
popularity in the web. In a web-based, it will do an
integrity check and only download the files that your
system needs. This saves you time in downloading. The
problems with this type of installation come up when you
introduce firewalls and strict security.
TYPES OF SOFTWARE INTALLATION
• Single exe installation - This is one that most of us
are familiar with, the install is a self compressed
executable file that you run which will extract
itself and contains all of the files needed to run
your installation as well as the explanation file
which tells the software where to load and what
changes to make.
TYPES OF SOFTWARE INTALLATION
•Windows Installer installation - With the
introduction of Windows 2000 into our
lives came the introduction of the
Windows Installer service, which resides
on a client machine and runs.
PORTABLE INSTALLER SOFTWARE
• A program that doesn't have any configuration options is
also a portable application. A portable application
(portable app), sometimes also called standalone, is a
program designed to read and write its configuration
settings into an accessible folder in the computer, usually
the folder where the portable application can be found.
This makes it easier to transfer the program with the
user's preferences and data between different computers.
PORTABLE INSTALLER SOFTWARE
• Like any application, portable applications must be
compatible with the computer system hardware and
operating system. If we are trying to install Windows
Operating System on a laptop that does not have a DVD
drive, or we want a portable installation tool that we can
use on a lot of computers, creating a bootable USB
Windows installation drive may be the answer we are
looking for.
PORTABLE BOOTABLE DEVICE
• A boot device is any piece of hardware that can
read or contains the files required for a computer to
start. For example, a hard drive, floppy disk drive,
CD-ROM drive, DVD drive, and USB jump drive
are all considered bootable devices. However,
unless the necessary boot files are stored on the
drive, diskette, or disc, the computer cannot.
THE RUFUS APPLICATION
• Rufus is a small utility that helps format and
create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB
keys/pendrives, memory sticks, etc. It can be be
especially useful for cases where: you need to
create USB installation media from bootable
ISOs (Windows, Linux, etc.); you need to work
on a system that doesn't have an OS installed;
you need to flash a BIOS or other firmware
from DOS; you want to run a low-level utility.
Rufus is significantly faster than similar
utilities and its open source and free.
THE RUFUS APPLICATION
• One of the main advantages of
Rufus is its user-friendly interface.
Even if you are not tech-savvy, you
can quickly navigate through the
software and perform various
operations effortlessly. The intuitive
layout and clear instructions make it
easy for anyone to utilize this tool
effectively.
STEPS IN CREATING BOOTABLE DEVICE
• Insert your flash drive. Make sure
that it is being read by your
device.
STEPS IN CREATING BOOTABLE DEVICE
• Run the Rufus Application and
check if your flash drive is
already recognized. Notice that
the Start Button is disabled.
STEPS IN CREATING BOOTABLE DEVICE
• Click “Select” to browse the Disk
Images of the ISO files of the
Windows 7 OS / Windows Server
2008 r2.
STEPS IN CREATING BOOTABLE DEVICE
• Notice that the boot selection
part has recognized now the
ISO file
ASSIGNMENT #1
A. Directions: Below is a scenario associated to the creation of a
USB bootable device. Analyze it and answer the Guide Questions
that follow. Write your answers in your data notebook.
• Scenario: Your USB flash drive was recognized by your computer and the
Rufus Application as well. However, when you try to browse the Windows 7
Operating System disk image file, you were prompted by an error.
• Guide Questions:
1. What conclusions can you make based on what was stated in the scenario?
2. How are you going to troubleshoot the issue?
3. As a CSS student, what was the impact of this lesson to you?
