Topic: Fighting crimes with GIS L1
STARTER
Identify the latitude and longitudes of key points. State the numbers they can see on
each of the vertical and horizontal lines. Identify the tools and methods they observe and
discuss briefly how technology helps in law enforcement.
Topic: Use of GIS in fighting crime
Students watch a video clip on:
•How GIS is used in combating crime
•Ways to prevent and decrease crime.

Fighting L1
GIS in Crime Fighting: GIS is used by police to
map crime patterns, identify hotspots, and predict
future crimes. (Show real-world examples or case
studies).
Data is raw information collected for a purpose,
e.g. monthly rainfall, street names, churches,
mosques, forests, population, rivers, livestock,
etc.
The purpose of GIS is to display data on a map in
a way that helps to find patterns, make decisions,
and take action.

The horizontal lines that run through the
earth as latitudes (also called Northings
because they increase towards the North).
The vertical lines as longitudes (also called
Eastings because they increase towards the
East).
The horizontal lines are read first before the
vertical lines.

The division of the sphere into 180 parts
from North to South and 360 parts from
East to West. The equator divides the earth
into north and south hemispheres.
On the other hand, there are 180 lines of
longitude from the prime meridian to the
East and another 180 lines of longitude
from the prime meridian to the West.

Starter
• Students use the
map on pg. 16 of
geog.2 to locate
different crimes and
locations.
• Explain how GIS is
used in crime
fighting. Introduce
today’s lesson by
asking, “How do
you think data is
organised and
mapped in GIS?”

Introduction: L2
Task 1: L2
1. Explain areas where there are more crimes
2. Identify factors that could be responsible for
the high rate of crime
3. Suggest what can be done to prevent trouble
there
Tasks 2
Using the map on page 16 of geog.2, attempt the following
questions:
Your turn page 17 of geog.2; question 3
Use of GIS in fighting crime (application of 4-figure
grid reference) L2
Task 2
Your turn page 17 of geog.2; Question 3
Extension Task
Using your city or state as a case study,
describe four ways in which the use of GIS,
maps, and grid references can help to fight
and reduce crime.
