Filipino Inventions and Innovations Guide

Filipino inventors and innovators have greatly contributed to the country's economic development through important discoveries and technologies. Some famous Filipino inventors include Alfredo Anos Sr., known as the "godfather of Filipino inventors" who created over 44 inventions, and Fe del Mundo who invented the medical incubator. Indigenous technologies developed in the Philippines include fermented foods, alcoholic beverages, textiles made from local materials, bamboo and coconut construction materials, and the jeepney form of transportation. More recent innovations include the first videophone invented by Gregorio Zara and the modern toy yo-yo popularized worldwide based on an older Filipino weapon. FILIPINO INVENTIONS

AND INNOVATIONS
Science, Technology and Society
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INVENTIONS AND
INNOVATIONS:
 To invent something is to discover a new thing.
Meanwhile to innovate means “TO USE A NEW
IDEA OR METHOD”. To innovate is to introduce
something new to the market, to manipulate existing
inventions and turn them into a product that is use in
the real world.
Scientists, inventors and innovators greatly
help in the economic development of a
country. In the Philippines, we have kind of
those whose exemplary works and
discoveries have contributed to the
progress of different industries.

VIDEO PHONE
• The first recorded videophone, or a two way television-
telephone, was invented by a Filipino engineer and
physicist named Gregorio Zara.
• It was taken out of Science fiction in 1995 when he first
introduced the device and patented it as a “photo phone
separator network”
YOYO
• It is used by the Philippine natives 400 years ago as a combat
weapon against Spaniards and intruders. The original version of
Yoyo was large and had sharp edges as well as studs. The weapon
was attached to sturdy and thick 20-feet long ropes that would use to
fling at the enemies or prey.
• The modern “yoyo” toy that we all know of was made by law
undergraduate Pedro Flores. Thanks to America, this toy has been
mass produced and popularized all over the world.
Filipino technologies are designed to address the country’s demand for self-
sufficiency. Local technologies and innovations in areas like textile
manufacture, food production, architecture and engineering have largely
contributed to the economic and social progress of the nation. The
Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is mandated to promote
indigenous technologies on the commercial level so that they can be
distributed in both the national and international markets .

The Philippines is a country that has many
unappreciated geniuses and many undiscovered talents.
Just like Jose Rizal, the Philippines’ National Hero
who is not just a patriot but a scientist and inventor as
well, the country also has many inventors that may
well be as great as other inventors in different
countries.
In article by Rainier Ronda in the Philippine
Star, he said that Jose Rizal was also
responsible for a number of inventions during
his exile in Dapitan. These inventions were
particularly related to agriculture and irrigation.
Among these are first brick-making machine,
an irrigation system, and biscuit molds.
