f0 = frequency of preceeding class
f2 = frequency of next class

3 Determine the missing frequencies when mode = 36 and total 6

frequency is 30.
C.I. 10 – 20 20 – 30 30 – 40 40 – 50 50 – 60
f — 5 12 — 2

Ans :Let the missing frequencies be x and y.

As the value of mode is 36, the modal class is 30 – 40

[As the frequencies cannot be in fractions]

From the summation of frequencies, we get
x + 5 + 12 + y + 2 = 30
y = 7, x + 5 + 12 + 7 + 2 = 30
x=4
Thus, the two missing frequencies are 4 and 7.

Ans :
Two frequencies are missing. Let the missing frequencies be denoted
by f1 and f2.

Ist equation : From summation of frequencies

75 + f1 + f2 = 100 f1 + f2 = 25 ... (i)
2nd equation : From information regarding median
M = 30, Median class is 30 – 40

...(ii)

Substituting f1 = 15 in equation (i), we get

f1 + f2 = 25 and f1 = 15
15 + f2 = 25 f2 = 10
Thus, f1 = 15 and f2 = 10.

14If the arithmetic mean of the data given below is 28, find out the 3
missing frequency :

arithmetic mean ( ) is 11.37 :
X 5 7 p 11 13 16 20
f 2 4 29 54 11 8 4

Ans :

1273.44 = 983 + 29p

29p = 290.44
p = 10.01 = 10
Hence, the missing value is 10.

16 Average daily wage of 50 workers of a factory was 200. Each 3

worker is given a raise of
20. What is the new average daily wage ?
Ans :Increase in wages of each worker = 20
Total increase in wages = 50 × 20 = 1,000
Total wages before increase in wages = 50 × 200 = 10,000
Total wages after increase in wages = 10,000 + 1,000 = 11,000

New average wage =

Thus, mean wage will increase by 20.
