SRM INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

18MAB303T – BIO STATISTICS – AY : 2022 -2023 EVEN SEMESTER

UNIT – 1 : TUTORIAL SHEET - 1
Part A

1. Find the arithmetic mean of the following frequency distribution:

𝒙 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
𝒇 5 9 12 17 14 10 6

2. The average salary of male employees in a firm was Rs 520 and that of female was Rs.420. The mean
salary of all employees was Rs.500. Find the percentage of male and female employees.
3. Obtain the median of the following frequency distribution:

𝒙 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
𝒇 8 10 11 16 20 -25 15 9 6

4. An incomplete frequency distribution is given as follows

Variable 10-20 20-30 30-40 40-50 50-60 60-70 70-80 Total
Frequency 12 30 ? 65 ? 25 18 229
Given that the median value is 46, determine the missing frequencies using the median formula.
5. Find the mode of the following distribution:

Class Interval 0-10 10-20 20-30 30-40 40-50 50-60 60-70 70-80
Frequency 5 8 7 12 28 20 10 10

Part B
6. Eight coins were tossed together and the number of heads resulting was noted. The operation was repeated
256 times and the frequencies (f) that were obtained for different values of x, the number of heads, are
shown in the following table. Calculate median, quartiles.

𝒙 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
𝒇 1 9 26 59 72 52 29 7 1

7. Given below is the distribution of 140 candidates obtaining marks X or higher in a certain examination (all
marks are given in whole numbers) :

Class Interval 10-19 20-29 30-39 40-49 50-59 60-69 70-79 80-89 90-99 Total
Frequency 7 15 18 25 30 20 16 7 2 140

Calculate the mean, median and mode of the distribution.

8. From the following ·table showing the wage distribution in a certain factory, determine: (i) the mean wage,
(ii) the median wage, (iii) the modal wage
Weekly wages 20-40 40-60 60-80 80-100 100-120 120-140 140-160 160-180 180-200
No. of employees 8 12 20 30 40 35 18 7 5
9. The following table shows the distribution of 100 families according to their expenditure per week.
Number of families corresponding to expenditure groups Rs. (10-20) and Rs.(30-40) are missing from the
table. The median and mode are given to be RS.25 and 24. Calculate the missing frequencies and then
arithmetic mean of the data:

Expenditure 0-10 10-20 20-30 30-40 40-50

No. of families 14 ? 27 ? 15

10. The Median and Mode of the following wage distribution are known to be Rs. 33·50 and Rs. 34
respectively. Find the values of 𝑓3 , 𝑓4 , 𝑓5 .
Wages(Rs) 0-10 10-20 20-30 30-40 40-50 50-60 60-70 total
Frequencies 4 16 𝑓3 𝑓4 𝑓4 6 4 230

ANSWERS

1. Arithmetic mean¯= 4·09

2. The percentage of male employees in the firm is 80 & percentage of female employees in the firm is 20
3. Median is 5
4. f 1 = 34 , f 2 = 45
5. Mode = 46.67
6. Q1= 3, Q3 = 5, Median =4
