1. Project Abstract
This project presents a deployable prototype of the core intelligence system for
CleanScanAI, a multi-functional AI-powered detection platform. This system directly
contributes to the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision by creating smart, technology-driven solutions
for urban and rural challenges. By integrating onboard Artificial Intelligence (AI) with real-
time cloud communication, this system provides actionable intelligence for municipal
authorities, aligning with key national missions like the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and the
Smart Cities Mission. The primary application demonstrated is the automated, real-time
visual monitoring of waste, laying the groundwork for a cleaner, more efficient, and data-
driven India.
2. Problem Statement & National Relevance
Achieving the goal of "Samriddhi Bharat" (a prosperous India) requires clean, healthy, and
efficiently managed living environments. A significant hurdle in our rapidly growing cities and
towns is inefficient waste management. Delayed waste collection, unidentified illegal
dumping sites, and overflowing public bins pose critical health and environmental risks.
Traditional manual monitoring is labor-intensive, costly, and fails to provide the real-time data
needed for prompt action. This project tackles this challenge head-on by creating an
automated system that provides instant, on-the-ground intelligence, enabling a shift from
reactive to proactive governance.
3. Project Objectives for a Viksit Bharat Solution
The primary objective is to develop and validate a low-cost, scalable, and self-reliant
(Atmanirbhar) technological solution for civic challenges.
Develop Core Intelligence: Create the complete software and machine learning
"brain" for the CleanScanAI platform.
Integrate Onboard AI: Train, convert, and deploy a custom TensorFlow Lite model
onto a camera-enabled microcontroller (XIAO ESP32-S3) for real-time, on-device
visual detection of waste.
Enable Real-Time Alerts: Develop a robust communication system using a Firebase
Realtime Database. The CleanScanAI prototype will instantly send its findings (e.g.,
"waste_detected: true," confidence score, timestamp) to a central dashboard, in line
with the Digital India mission.
Validate Feasibility: Demonstrate a successful end-to-end workflow—from image
capture to onboard AI inference to cloud alert—proving the viability of this Make in
India technology for national deployment.
4. Technical Approach (Atmanirbhar Innovation)
The system is built on accessible, low-cost, and powerful hardware, promoting self-reliant
innovation that can be scaled across the nation.
Prototyping Platform: The Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32-S3 is the heart of the
prototype. Its integrated camera, powerful processor for AI, and built-in Wi-Fi provide
a complete "sense, think, act" solution on a single, affordable board.
Software & AI: The system is programmed in C++ (Arduino). A custom AI model is
trained using TensorFlow (Python) and then optimized using TensorFlow Lite for
Microcontrollers (TFLM). This allows powerful AI to run directly on the device,
reducing latency and the need for constant high-bandwidth internet.
Data & Communication (Digital India): The device connects via Wi-Fi to send live
data to a Google Firebase Realtime Database. This creates an instant, scalable,
and secure data pipeline for a central monitoring dashboard, empowering authorities
with real-time, actionable data.
5. Impact & Contribution to National Missions
This prototype serves as a powerful proof-of-concept for technology that directly supports
India's development goals:
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan: A future fleet of garbage scanners equipped with this
system could patrol cities, instantly reporting overflowing bins and illegal dumping
sites, leading to cleaner public spaces and better health outcomes.
Smart Cities Mission: The system is a perfect example of a smart sensor node. It
provides the "data-driven decision-making" that is core to the Smart Cities Mission,
allowing for optimized resource allocation (e.g., sending sanitation trucks only where
needed).
Modular Foundation for Samriddhi Bharat: The established pipeline (Sensor ->
Onboard AI -> Cloud) is a modular foundation that can be adapted for numerous
other challenges facing a developing India:
o Smart Agriculture: Adding soil sensors to monitor crop health.
6. Conclusion
This project successfully validates a low-cost, scalable, and powerful intelligence system for
the CleanScanAI platform. It delivers a practical and innovative solution, leveraging
indigenous-friendly AI and IoT technology to solve real-world problems. By providing a clear
path from data to action, this prototype is a direct and tangible step towards building the
clean, smart, and prosperous Viksit Bharat of 2047.
