a) Like dissolves like.
b) Egg shrinks in size when placed in sodium chloride solution.
c) The boiling point of water is more than that of ether.
7.
A zinc rod is dipped in 0.1 M ZnSO4ZnSO4 solution. The salt is 95% dissociated of
this dilution at 298 K. Calculate electrode potential.
(EZn 2+/
Zn=−0.76V)(EZn2+/Zn=-0.76V).
8.
Calculate the mass of ascorbic acid (vitamin C, C 6H8O6) to be dissolved in 75 g
acetic acid to lower its melting point by 1.5°C, K f = 3.9 K kg mol–1.
9. Vapour pressure of pure water at 298 K is 23.8 mm Hg. 50 g of urea
(NH2CONH2) is dissolved in 850 g of water. Calculate the vapour pressure of
water for this solution and its relative lowering.
10. Differentiate between molarity and molality for a solution. How does a
change in temperature influence their values?
11. Each of these questions contain two statements, Assertion and Reason.
Each of these questions also has four alternative choices, only one of which is
the correct answer. You have to select one of the codes (a), (b), (c) and (d)
given below.
(a) Assertion is correct, reason is correct; reason is a correct explanation for
assertion.
(b) Assertion is correct, reason is correct; reason is not a correct explanation
for assertion
(c) Assertion is correct, reason is incorrect
(d) Assertion is incorrect, reason is correct.
a. Assertion (A) IM aqueous solution of glucose contains 180 g of glucose in I
kg water.
Reason (R) Solution containing one mole of solute in 1000 g of solvent is
called one molal solution.
b. Assertion (A) Pressure does not have any significant effect on solubility of
any type of solutes in liquids.
Reason (R) Solids and liquids are highly incompressible and remain
unaffected by change in pressure.
c. Assertion (A) When scuba divers come towards surface, their capillaries get
blocked which is painful and dangerous to life.
Reason (R) There occurred release of dissolved gases as the pressure
decreases and leads to the formation of bubbles of nitrogen in the blood.
Section – C
2X5 = 10
12.
(a) State Kohlrausch law of independent migration of ions. Write an
expression for the molar conductivity of acetic acid at infinite dilution according to
(b) Calculate ⋀°m for acetic acid. Given that ⋀° m (HCl) = 426 S cm2
Kohlrausch law.
mol–1 ⋀°m (NaCl) = 126 S cm2 mol–1 ⋀°m (CH3COONa) = 91 S cm2 mol–1
13. Read the passage given below and answer the following questions:
A galvanic cell consists of two half cells. Each half cell contains an electrolytic
solution and a metallic electrode. The electrode at which- oxidation takes place is
called an anode and the electrode at which reduction takes place is called the
cathode. The half-cells are separated from each other by means of a porous pot or a
salt bridge. The passage of current from one electrode to the other indicates the
existence of potential difference between them. This difference of potential which
causes current to flow from the electrode of higher negative potential is called the
electromotive force (emf). The potential of SHE is assigned an arbitrary value of zero.
E° = 0 V. It is used as a reference electrode for measuring the standard electrode
potentials. When the elements are arranged in order of their standard electrode
potentials, a series known as electrochemical series is obtained. A species with
higher standard reduction potential has greater tendency to accept electrons to
undergo reduction or vice versa. If E0cell is positive, ΔG° would be negative and
reaction would be spontaneous. If E0cell is negative, ΔG° would be positive and the
reaction would be non-spontaneous.
I. Select the correct statement(s) for the Galvanic cell.
(a) It is not an electrochemical cell
(b) It converts the electrical energy to chemical energy
(c) In this device the Gibbs energy of spontaneous redox reaction is used
(d) They are not used for running electrical gadgets
II. Which of the following will form the cathode with respect toiron anode in an
electrolytic cell?
(a) Mg (b) Al (c) Cu (d) Zn
III. Which of the following statements is true for an electrochemical cell?
(a) Reduction occurs at H2 electrode
(b) H2 is cathode and Cu is anode
(c) H2 is anode and Cu is cathode
(d) Oxidation occurs at Cu electrode
IV. Pure water does not conduct electricity because it
(a) has low boiling point (b) is almost unionized (c) is neutral (d) is readily
decomposed
V. Which of the following statements is true for an electrochemical cell?
(a) Reduction occurs at H2 electrode
(b) H2 is cathode and Cu is anode
(c) H2 is anode and Cu is cathode
(d) Oxidation occurs at Cu electrode
