Assignment-7

1. Introduction
Urbanization is one of the most significant global trends of the 21st century. In
India, rapid urban growth has transformed cities like Pune into major
economic and educational hubs. However, this expansion has come with
several environmental and social challenges.
This study examines how the growing population and urban sprawl of Pune
have affected local resources such as land, water, energy, and air quality, and
suggests measures for sustainable urban development.

2. Objectives
● To analyze the causes of rapid urbanization in Pune.

● To study the impact of population growth on essential natural resources.

● To identify environmental and infrastructural challenges arising from

urban pressure.

● To propose sustainable strategies for managing urban growth.

3. Urbanization Trends in Pune

● Pune is one of the fastest-growing cities in Maharashtra, with a
population exceeding 7 million as of 2025.

● It is known as an IT, industrial, and educational hub, attracting

thousands of migrants annually.

● Expansion of suburbs such as Hinjewadi, Wagholi, Baner, and Kharadi

has led to the conversion of agricultural lands into residential and
commercial zones.

4. Causes of Urban Growth

1. Industrialization: The establishment of IT parks and automobile
industries has created massive employment opportunities.

2. Educational Institutions: Presence of renowned colleges and

universities attracts students nationwide.

3. Migration: People move to Pune seeking jobs, better living standards,
and modern amenities.

4. Infrastructure Development: Rapid construction of highways, metro

lines, and housing projects accelerates urban expansion.

5. Impact on Local Resources

a. Land Resources

● Rapid real estate development has reduced green cover and

agricultural lands.

● Encroachment on hill slopes and riverbanks has increased soil erosion

and flooding risks.

b. Water Resources

● Over-dependence on Khadakwasla and Panshet dams for drinking

water.

● Groundwater levels are depleting due to excessive borewell usage.

● Water pollution from untreated domestic and industrial waste affects the
Mula-Mutha River.

c. Air Quality

● Increasing number of vehicles (over 40 lakh registered vehicles) has

worsened air quality.

● Frequent traffic congestion leads to higher emissions of CO₂ and

particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10).
d. Energy and Waste

● High population density increases electricity demand and electronic

waste generation.

● Improper waste segregation leads to landfill overflow in areas like Uruli

Devachi.

6. Environmental and Social Impacts

● Rising temperatures due to urban heat island effect.

● Increase in flooding incidents during monsoons due to poor drainage

and loss of wetlands.

● Growing inequality between well-developed areas and slums due to

unplanned development.

● Pressure on public transport and basic amenities such as healthcare

and education.

7. Sustainable Urban Management Strategies

1. Promote Vertical Development – Reduce land consumption through
vertical housing instead of horizontal sprawl.

2. Improve Public Transportation – Expand the Pune Metro, bus services,
and encourage carpooling.

3. Rainwater Harvesting – Implement in all new buildings to recharge

groundwater.

4. Green Spaces – Preserve hills, parks, and riverbanks to maintain

ecological balance.

5. Smart Waste Management – Use IoT-based bins and recycling

programs for plastic and e-waste.
6. Renewable Energy Use – Encourage solar panels in institutions, offices,
and homes.

8. Conclusion
Pune’s rapid urbanization has brought economic prosperity but also strained
local resources and ecosystems. Sustainable urban planning, strong policy
enforcement, and active community participation are vital to balance
development with environmental preservation.
If managed wisely, Pune can evolve into a model smart city that ensures both
progress and ecological harmony for future generations.
