Experiment: Transistor as a switch

Aim

-To know the nature of LDR and transistors

-To know the concept of transistor circuits

-To implement the circuit in other applications

Apparatus

-Resistors (1 ko, 2.2 KO, 220 ΚΩ)

-LED

-Multimeter

-LDR

-Two C945 transistors

-12V battery

Theory

-A photoresistor (or light-dependent resistor, LDR, or photo- conductive cell) is a light-

controlled variable resistor. The resistance of a photoresistor decreases with increasing
incident light intensity; in other words, it exhibits photoconductivity. A photoresistor can be
applied in light-sensitive detector circuits and light-activated and dark- activated switching
circuits.

-C945 is a Negative Positive Negative (NPN) bipolar junction transistor. It has three regions
emitter, base and collector. Its base is doped with P type semi-conductor material. Emitter
and collector are doped with N type semiconducting material. It's a low-cost device and is
very popular in the market due to its large range of applications.
Procedure
-One end of 220 ko resistor is connected with the positive edge of 9V battery and the other
end is connected in series with LDR. The other point of LDR is connected with the negative
edge of battery.

-One end of 1 k resistor is connected with the positive edge of 9V battery and the other end is
connected with the anode of LED.

-Cathode of LED is connected with the collector of C945 transistor and the emitter of
transistor is connected with the negative edge of battery.

-The base is connected to the junction point of emitter of another C945 transistor and 1k
resistor.

-Another end of this 1k resistor is connected to the negative terminal.

-The base of the second transistor is connected to 2.2k resistor and the end of that resistor is
connected to the junction of 220k resistor and LDR.
Results

Conclusion
-From this experiment, we came to know how does a LDR work and the implementation of
LDR together with the C945 transistor. This circuit can further be used in other applications
in our daily life.
