NORMS OF PRESENTATION OF INTERNSHIP REPORTS

THE VOCATIONAL TRAINING OF BBA/B-TECH (YEAR THREE) IS TRAINING


WITH A MINIMAL DURATION OF TEN (10) WEEKS IN THE ENTERPRISE
IT LEADS TO THE WRITING OF AN INTERNSHIP REPORT

The internship report is an academic and professional document useful at different levels:
- for the enterprise: it allows the enterprise to discover (if that is not yet done) or to
better understand some of its important problems;
- for the institute: it enables to better appreciate the quality of the student's mastery of
the discipline and his/her professional insertion or integration process;
- for the student: it enables him/her to justify his/her skills (or competences) and the
quality of his/her insertion in the enterprise where the internship has been carried out.
It is also a strategically important document for enhancing the student's professional
qualities in the event of recruitment.

For all these reasons, the internship report should be presented simultaneously in an
analytical and descriptive way.

On the substance
It should reflect the status of "consultant" or "external auditor" that you take on during your
internship (during the whole duration of your internship). This means for you, a real effort of
description and of analysis of the important problem identified. The diagnosis of the situation
should be a fundamental dimension of your approach. The method of resolution of the
problem should be clear and precise; the style of writing should be scientific. All the
justificatory elements or supporting elements of the analysis and the suggested solutions
should be included in the appendices or eventually in the body of the internship report.

If eventually there are some hypotheses, they should be considered and formulated as tracks
for future research and not as propositions to be tested.

Your internship report will be evaluated on four essential points:


1. the nature and content of the tasks performed in the enterprise;
2. the effort made to identify a problem observed in the enterprise and directly related to
the work carried out by the trainee (intern);

3. the methodological approach to the resolution of the problem identified (the quality of
the diagnosis which should be fairly scientific);
4. the quality of the proposed solutions (realism of the proposed actions and efforts to
justify them).

Thus, as a matter of form, the report should follow the following editing canvas.

MAIN BODY OF THE INTERNSHIP REPORT

CHAPTER ONE: GENERAL INTRODUCTION

This is the beginning of the main body of the internship report and should be designated
as Chapter one
• Background of the study : it comprised historical, theoretical and the contextual issues
related to the study.
• Statement of the problem : state the problem and the central argument of the internship
report.
• Research questions: state the main research question which is the research topic
translated into a question. This is closely followed by specific research questions.
• Objectives of the study : state the main and specific objectives of the study
• Significance of the study: state the importance and relevance of the study to the
stakeholders and its contribution to existing knowledge. It is optional.
• Methodology
• Plan of the work

CHAPTER TWO: PRESENTATION OF THE COMPANY AND THE COURSE OF
THE INTERNSHIP

This is the analytical phase of the work which goes up to the identification of an important
problem in the enterprise. Specifically, this chapter should consist of two sections:

Section 1: this is the one that locates the enterprise (historical record, activities, products,
markets, distribution networks, competitors, environment, evolution, etc.). It is therefore the
presentation of the enterprise in which the internship has been carried out.

Section 2: It is the one that presents in a descriptive and analytical manner the work done by
the student in the enterprise: theme and objectives of the internship, concrete tasks assigned to
the student; how the student organized himself/herself to carry out his/her tasks, eventual
difficulties encountered and the methods of resolution of these difficulties, etc. In other
words, the trainee should relate his/her daily life in the enterprise.

The conclusion of this chapter is a synthesis of the two sections that leads into the statement
of an important problem identified by the trainee in the enterprise. More precisely, in the
conclusion, the student should highlight all the problems identified in the enterprise. Among
these problems, he/she must choose the most important one (according to his/her own
perception) which will be the subject of analysis and recommendations for action in the
second part. This problem should logically emerge progressively after the reading of the two
sections. It is therefore not a gratuitous assertion without a genesis, without a background.

CHAPTER THREE: EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF THE PROBLEM IDENTIFIED


WITHIN THE ENTERPRISE

The first section should be devoted to a review of the literature on the subject. It deals with
written materials related to the research topic. It presents the key concepts and theoretical
foundations. In other words, the student deals theoretically with the problem. He/she can draw
on parts of his/her teaching that he/she considers necessary to provide theoretical answers to
the problem. These ideas must be organised and structured in such a way as to present a
logical and coherent demonstration in this solution. Thus, he/she calls upon well indicated
authors with well-presented references according to scientifically recognised standards.

NB. This is not a form of copying parts of the courses. In fact, it is this chapter, and more so
this section, which illustrates the student's ability to make a coherent, precise and concise

synthesis of his readings, knowledge and conjectures in order to solve in a clear and scientific
way a problem which he has identified himself during the internship.

In the second section of this chapter, the candidate presents the problem previously identified
(analysis and diagnosis of the problem: nature, manifestation, eventual causes, consequences,
etc.) and the methodology used to solve the problem. It is important to assign a paragraph to
the methodology adopted (documentary search, secondary data collected, internal surveys,
interviews of the persons in charge and other employees, data processing, etc.).

The candidate should present a practical case according to his subject. In this case, he is asked
to show how his problem is regularly dealt with in his company. Therefore, he starts by
explaining the case statement, then the work to be done and then the solution as experienced
or practiced in the enterprise. Here the figures from the enterprise are the only elements that
testify to the student's time in the enterprise. This is also the place to say that, once again, the
internship diary has its contribution in terms of data, ideas and other information that can
comment on or analyse the case.

It should be noted that in this chapter, only data with credible and viable sources make the
report meaningful. The ‘’Copies/pasted’’ are not welcome as this is the place to measure the
student's real ability to relate theory to practice.

CHAPTER FOUR: ANALYSES AND RECOMMENDATIONS


Section 1: analyses
It is in this section that the student makes a critical analysis of the problem (for this purpose
the candidate should use the theoretical outcomes and the information collected in the
enterprise in order to reinforce his/her position).
1.1. Strengths: the strengths are related to the topic treated without losing sight of the
consequences on the whole enterprise.
1.2. Weaknesses: here the development will follow the same logic as previously
described.

Section 2: Recommendations
This section presents the solution recommended by the student and which should be
sufficiently justified (precise documents in the main work or in the annex). He can largely
make use of the existing documentation to back up his/her propositions of solutions.
Unjustified recommendations are forbidden. The recommendations should be equally related
to the objective without losing sight of their practicability (feasibility).

CHAPTER FIVE: GENERAL CONCLUSION
The general conclusion summarises all the ideas developed in the report. Here, the student
should retake the basic question raised in his/her work. He/she should remind the
methodology adopted then he/she should highlight the results obtained as well as the main
recommendations. The candidate should not consider the propositions as a panacea. It is here
that his/her humility will be marked.

NB: Chapters two, three and four should always have a brief introduction of what each
chapter is all about and end with is a summary of the main issues discussed.

REFERENCES
This part lists the documents (books, articles, files, documents of the enterprise, etc.) and any
websites to which you referred during the writing of your report. Reference list should have
only the names of the authors having been cited by the student in the work. The advisable
format is American Psychological Association (APA) style. APA style is one of several styles
for academic writing. APA requires that information be cited in 2 different ways: within the
text and in a reference list at the end of the internship report, just after the chapter five.

APPENDICES
This part contains the illustrative documents referred to in the main body of the report. The
appendices shall be numbered.

FINAL IMPORTANT NOTES


1. Number of pages of the report: 30 pages minimum and 50 pages maximum (the
pages of the annexes are not counted).
2. Typing: The character type, Times New Roman (Font face) of font size 12 shall be
used within the text except the said text necessitates special font sizes.
3. Margins: the following margins shall apply: 3.5cm to the left edge of the page, 2.5cm
on the other three edges so that the bound volume can be trimmed after binding.
4. Spacing: Lines of text must be 1.5. The text begins 1.5cm under the title of the
chapter.
5. Cover page: in addition to the standard inscriptions (school, university, etc.), the
cover page should have the name of the internship supervisor in the enterprise and that
of the school. The student should precise his/her registration number on the cover page
(below his/her name).
6. Language: the use of British English is compulsory

The report reflects the student's role as a 'consultant' or 'external auditor' through the analytical and descriptive presentation of identified problems and the emphasis on scientific writing style. The student is required to diagnose situations and propose realistic solutions, showcasing a comprehensive understanding and critical analysis similar to a consultant's role .

The internship report serves multiple roles: For the enterprise, it helps in discovering or understanding important problems. For the institute, it assesses the student's mastery of the discipline and professional integration. For the student, it justifies their skills and integration quality within their internship company .

References should be formatted according to the APA style, which includes in-text citations and a reference list at the end. This formatting is essential for maintaining academic integrity and ensuring the report's credibility by clearly indicating the sources of information and theories used .

The methodology section should include a detailed analysis of the problem previously identified, incorporating a description of the nature, causes, and consequences. Students must outline their approach, referencing data collection methods like surveys, interviews, and documentary searches .

A student should identify and choose an important problem based on a synthesis of observations and analyses of the enterprise. The problem should logically emerge from the interactions and information gathered in previous chapters. The chosen problem must be significant and directly linked to the trainee's tasks within the company .
