Instruction: Attempt all the questions.
1 If X is a continuous random variable with probability density function given by
𝑘𝑥, 0 ≤ 𝑥 < 5
𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑘(10 − 𝑥), 𝑘𝑥, 5 ≤ 𝑥 < 10
0, 𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑤𝑖𝑠𝑒
(i) Find the value of k. (ii) Mean of X (iii) P(5 < 𝑥 ≤ 10)
2 In a toy factory, machines A, B and C manufacture respectively 25%, 35% and 40% of
the total. Of their output 5, 4 and 2 percent are defective bolts. A toy is drawn at
random from the total production. What is the probability that the toy drawn is
defective? Also, find the probability that it was manufactured by machine A?
3 In the normal distribution, 7% of the items are under 35 and 89% are under 63.
Determine the mean and variance of the distribution. Given that
P(0 < z < 0.18) = 0.07, P(0 < z < 1.48) = 0.43, P(0 < z < 1.23) = 0.39.
4 Determine the value of c that makes the unction f(x, y) = c(x + y), a joint probability
mass function over the points x = 1, 2, 3 and y = 1, 2, 3. Find E(X) and E(Y).
5 Two random variables X and Y have the following joint density function:
(2 − 𝑥 − 𝑦), 0 < 𝑥 < 1, 1 < 𝑦 < 1
𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) =
0, 𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑤𝑖𝑠𝑒
Find i) Marginal probability density function of X and Y.
ii) Var(x) and Var(y)
iii) Cov(X, Y)
iv) Coefficient of Correlation between X and Y
6 Find the covariance and coefficient of correlation for joint density function of two
random variables X and Y:
f(x, y) = e x - y over the range 0 < x, 0 < y.
Are X and Y independent?
7 The ages of boys and girls are given in following table:
X(Age of boys) 23 27 28 29 30
Y (Age of girls) 18 22 23 24 35
Calculate the coefficient of correlation between X and Y?
8 A random sample of size n1 = 16 is selected from a normal population with mean 75
and standard deviation 8. A normal random sample of size n2 = 9 is taken from another
normal population with mean 70 and standard deviation 12. Let X1 bar and X2 bar be
the sample mean of the first and second sample respectively. Find the probability that
X1bar – X2bar exceeds 4. (Given P(Z > -0.2236) = 0.5871)
9 The means of samples of sizes 1000 and 2000 are 67.5 and 68.0 cm respectively. Can
the samples be regarded as drawn from the same population of standard deviation 2.5
cm (Given Z0.025 = 1.96)
10 Obtain the equation of two lines of regression for the following data. Also, obtain the estimate
of X for Y = 70.
X: 65 66 67 67 68 69 70 72
Y: 67 68 65 68 72 72 69 71
11 Obtain a regression plane by using multiple linear regression to fit the data given
below:
x 1 2 3 4
y 0 1 2 3
z 12 18 24 30
12 Construct the dual of the following LPP and solve the dual using graphical method:
Maximize W = 2y1 + 4y2 + 3y3
Subject to -y1 + y2 + y3 > 2, 2y1 + y2 > 1, y1, y2, y3 > 0
13 Solve the following LPP by Simplex method:
Maximize Z = 5x1 + 3x2
Subject to x1 + x2 < 2, 5x1 + 2x2 < 10, 3x1 + 8x2 < 12, x1, x2 > 0.
14 Applying dual simplex method, solve the following LPP
Minimize Z = x1 + x2
subject to:
2x1 + x2 > 2,
-x1 - x2 > 1,
x1, x2 > 0.
15 Using VAM method, find the initial basic feasible solution of the following
transportation problem. Check optimality and hence find the optimal solution.
