Post Occupancy Evaluation
Q
What is happening inside the building?
What we do…
User Centric Design
•Designers gain direct feedback about how their design
performs in real-world conditions
•They can observe how users actually interact with the space
•Allows for learning and improvement in future design iterations
•Helps bridge the gap between “design intent and actual usage”
POE: A systematic evaluation of how well a built environment meets the needs
and expectations of its users
“To maximize
wellbeing and
productivity”
1. Fine tune a new building through determining
key investment decisions & enhance building
performance with satisfying user
2. Inform the designers & contractors about their
applied product and production outcome based
on evidence
3. Get benchmark data and compare buildings to
question different certification system and
provides nuanced insights beyond traditional
architectural assessments
4. Promotes sustainable and user-centered design
with minimum modification through adaptation
process
“To maximize
wellbeing and
productivity”
• Long-term survey: (for over the months and years)
to spot possible issues by observing several
parameters for long time in different locations
-Such as technical data (indoor air quality, thermal
parameter, visual parameter, environmental-
temperature, air velocity, humidity, luminance,
presence of carbon dioxide etc. based on applied
physical features in design)
• Spot survey: to get detail information in short
time (of some spotted issues in more detail to
verify the magnitude). Requires the presence of
people who experience the issue.
-Site specific, repeated over times multiple times
• Data collection methods: Surveys, interviews,
observations, and physical measurements
General information: No. of occupants, building age, climatic conditions, local
cultural practice etc.
Information about layout/furniture, material, clothing and related information
about issues

For POE Occupants perception of indoor environmental quality vs. real time measures
Occupants control over activities related to environmental condition: Sick
building syndrome
Determination of the Purpose and Objectives of the POE
Identification of Building Elements and Systems to be Evaluated
Determination of Metrics to be Evaluated during the POE
