Instructions:
(insert instructions to students here)
• Complete all questions.
• All calculations must be shown fully.
Additional student instructions
1. Students must upload their answer scripts in a single PDF file (answer scripts must not be
password protected or uploaded as “read only” files)
2. Incorrect file format and uncollated answer scripts will not be considered.
3. NO emailed scripts will be accepted.
4. Students are advised to preview submissions (answer scripts) to ensure legibility and that
the correct answer script file has been uploaded.
5. Incorrect answer scripts and/or submissions made on unofficial examinations platforms
(including the invigilator cell phone application) will not be marked and no opportunity will
be granted for resubmission. Only the last answer file uploaded within the stipulated
submission duration period will be marked.
6. Mark awarded for incomplete submission will be the student’s final mark. No opportunity for
resubmission will be granted.
7. Mark awarded for illegible scanned submission will be the student’s final mark. No
opportunity for resubmission will be granted.
8. Submissions will only be accepted from registered student accounts.
9. Students suspected of dishonest conduct during the minor test will be subjected to
disciplinary processes. Students may not communicate with any other person or request
assistance from any other person during their examinations. Plagiarism is a violation of
academic integrity and students who plagiarize, copy from published work or Artificial
Intelligence Software (e.g., ChatGPT) or online sources (e.g., course material), will be in
violation of the Policy on Academic Integrity and the Student Disciplinary Code and may be
referred to a disciplinary hearing. Unisa has a zero tolerance for plagiarism and/or any
other forms of academic dishonesty.
10. Queries that are beyond Unisa’s control include the following:
a. Personal network or service provider issues
b. Load shedding/limited space on personal computer
c. Crashed computer
d. Non-functioning cameras or web cameras
1. You have recently opened a coffee shop at mall @ 55 in centurion. Customers
arrive at the coffee shop, queue up to place their orders, wait to receive their
orders, and then leave the shop.
Assumptions:
Customers arrive at the coffee shop following a Poisson distribution with an
average arrival rate of 10 customers per minute.
The time taken to serve a customer follows an exponential distribution with a
mean service rate of 12 customers per minute.
The shop operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
The system is assumed to have infinite queue capacity.
Calculate:
1.1. Average time a customer spends in the system (W)
1.2. Average time a customer spends waiting in the queue (Wq)
1.3. Average number of customers in the system (L)
1.4. Average number of customers in the queue (Lq)
(8)
2. Differentiate between static and dynamic simulation models and give an
example of each model type. (8)
3. Using excel do a Static Monte Carlo simulation of the sum when throwing four
fair dice. You place 2 dice in each hand. (Toss 50 times)
3.1. Calculate the Mean Sum, Min Sum, and Max Sum.
3.2. Illustrate the frequency of rolling 4 dice on a bar graph.
(20)
(Submit excel file)
4. You work in company that sells bottles. These bottles are manufactured in 2
stations namely station 1 and station 2. The bottles are manufactured in stations
based on station availability. After the bottles are manufactured, they go to the
quality control department where they are inspected. If inspection is passed the
bottles will go to warehouse 1 (for station 1) or warehouse 2 (for station 2). When
the bottles fail inspection, they move to a department called adjustment before
they are diverted back to either station 1 or station 2 then they follow the main
sequence again.
Assumptions:
The source produces one type of entity (bottles). The bottles from station 1 pass
inspection 80% of the time while bottles from station 2 pass inspection 70% of
the time.
Simulate this plant on Simio and submit a running model. (25)
