Unit Circle Tutorial for Grade 11 STEM

The document provides a tutorial on pre-calculus topics related to the unit circle, including: 1) Converting between degrees and radians, with examples of conversions in both directions. 2) Describing angles in standard position and identifying coterminal angles, with examples of sketching angles and finding coterminal angles. 3) Defining a unit circle as a circle with radius of 1 unit and center at the origin, and providing a blank unit circle diagram.

Pre- Calculus

TOPIC : Unit Circle

LEVEL : Grade 11- STEM

Part 1 : Degrees to Radian and vice-versa conversion

Example:

ACTIVITY: Convert the following degrees to radian and vice-versa.

3𝜋
170° 45°

4𝜋
2𝜋 − 270°

Part 2 : Angles in Standard Position and Coterminal Angles

An angle is in standard position if its vertex is at the origin and its initial
side lies along the positive x-axis. A positive angle is measured
counterclockwise from the initial side and a negative angle is measured
clockwise.

Sketch each of the following angles in standard position.

7 2
1. 150o 2. 120o 3.  4.
4 3

Determine the quadrant in which the terminal side of the angle lies.

5. 130o ________ 6. 336o __________ 7. 285o ________

22 
8. 260o ________ 9. __________ 10.  ________
3 12
Coterminal angles: are angles in standard position (angles with the
initial side on the positive x-axis) that have a common terminal side. The
degree measure of coterminal angles differs always by multiples of 360

ACTIVITY:

Give 2 coterminal angles, one positive and one negative for each of the following.

11. 34o ________ ________ 12. 45o ________ ________

13. 120o ________ ________ 14. 300o ________ ________

4 11

Part 3 : Unit Circle

A unit circle is a circle of unit radius with center at origin. A circle is a closed
geometric figure such that all the points on its boundary are at equal distance
from its center. For a unit circle, this distance is 1 unit, or the radius is 1 unit.

cos X sec 1/x
tan y/x cot x/y
