1.1 INTRODUCTION
A multimeter (also known as a volt-ohm-milliammeter, volt-ohmmeter or VOM) is a
measuring instrument that can measure multiple electrical properties. A typical multimeter
can measure voltage, resistance and current, in which can be used as a voltmeter, ammeter
and ohmmeter. There are two types of multimeter which is an analog that are old fashioned
meter which uses a micro ammeter with a moving pointer to show the readings. While the
new version of multimeter is the digital multimeter (DMM or DVOM) have a numeric display
and can also display a graphical bar indicating the measured value. It easier to take quick
reading with digital multimeter because measuring data with a digital multimeter is more
precise than the analog ones.
As I mentioned earlier, a multimeter is used to measure voltage, current and
resistance and even to check for conductivity. As to how to use a multimeter is before you
test or point your probe which is probe red are positive (+) and probe black is negative (-) to
an object, you have to locate the dial of your multimeter. It’s having the arc-shaped scales
visible through the window and a pointer which will indicate the values read from the scale.
On the arc-shaped or we call a regulator on the meter dial face may be different colours that
indicate each scale. It has difference value that determine the ranges of magnitude to
measure difference strengths of voltage, resistance and amps. So, if you have your
multimeter set to 20 in the DCV section, the multimeter will measure voltages up to 20 volts.
This depends on what you want to measure since the multimeter can measure resistance,
voltage, current or to check for conductivity all you have to do is to adjust your regulator to
the right ranges and point your probe to the object and read the reading that been show on
the pointer scale on the multimeter.
ANALYSIS
Multimeter is an essential test tool that used to measure two or more electrical value. It give
you important reading of the circuit or electronic component so that you can analyse your
component condition and ditech any faulty in your electronic component. Beside multimeter
there are also difference type of meter that have the same function as much as multimeter
like clamp meter or ohm meter that can be use as a test tool. This tool provide more precise
reading and much more easy to be use.
QUESTIONS
Q1 : Explain how an ohmmeter can measure the resistance of a component (in this case, a
light bulb) when there is no battery or other source of power connected to it
Answ: An ohmmeter can measure resistance without other source of power connected to
cause it has its own internal power source. When an ohmmeter is connected to a component
like a light bulb, it applies a small known voltage from its internal battery across the
component. Then, it measure the resulting current that flow through the component and uses
Ohm’s law (V=I*R) to calculate the resistance (R) of the component.
Q2: identify the reading you would expect the ohmmeter to indicate if the light bulb were
burnt out (failed “open”)
Answ: if the light bulb were to burnt out (failed ‘open’), the ohmmeter will indicate a very high
resistance or an open circuit, which might display an OL (overload) or infinite resistance
reading. This indicate that there are no current can flow through the bulb due to open
filament.
Q3: What would be wrong with measuring the resistance of a light bulb while it is being
powered by a battery?
Answ: measuring the resistance of a light bulb while it is being powered by a battery may not
provide an accurate value due to voltage drop. As the light bulb heats up and current flow
through it, there may be voltage drop across the bulb internal components, such as the
filament. These voltage drop can affect the accuracy of resistance measurement.
Q4: Suppose we needed to determine the resistance of the light bulb in this circuit, while
energized:
Answ: to determine the resistance of a light bulb while it being energized in a circuit, you can
use the Ohm’s Law. Ohm’s Law states that resistance (R) is equal to voltage (V) divided by
current (I). or you can measure the voltage across the light bulb by using a voltmeter to
measure the voltage supplied to the light bulb. This is the voltage (V) in the Ohm’s Law.
Make sure the measurement is to be perform while the light bulb is energized and connected
to the circuit. This will give the resistance of the light bulb at that specific operating point.
STRENGH AND WEAKNESS
STRENGH
1. Cost-Effective
Analog multimeter tend to be less expensive than the digital multimeter making them
a cost-effective choice for simple measurement task.
2. Visual Indication
The analog pointer provides a continuous and direct visual indication of the
resistance value, which some users find easier to interpret than digital display.
3. Simplicity
Analog multimeter are straightforward to use and do not require a power source,
making it suitable for basic resistance measurements.
WEAKNESS
1. Parallax Error
The angle at which you view the analog scale can introduce parallax error, leading to
inaccurate reading.
2. Lack of Auto-Ranging
Analog multimeter lack automatic range selection, meaning you have to manually
choose the appropriate measurement range.
3. Limited Range and Sensitivity
Analog multimeter often have more limited resistance measurement range compare
to digital multimeter.
IMPROVEMENT
As the latest model of multimeter like the DMM is already the most modern that have many
features that is easy to use and have more accurate reading, there are still some room for
further improvement that can be done which is to reduce the number of changes during
testing, optimizing trigger delay, auto-range variations, and turning on/off display function will
more likely be a good idea to improve the performance of a multimeter so it much easier to
use.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION
Discussion
While I completed this assessment, I found out that multimeter have many ways to use when
it comes to measure the electric voltage, determine the current and resistance of any
electrical appliances and that include finding faulty components in electronic circuit.
Conclusion
After several thought I came out to a conclusion that the main reason of the multimeter was
invented was its to avoid the user from using a defective electronic appliance that may harm
our safety if were to use. With multimeter, we can always check the condition of any
electrical appliance before we use is. This also apply so that we can measure the capacity of
electronic component so that we know the limit of the component and to not over overuse it
until the point we eventually broke the electronic component where it can be harm to our
body.
The main target for this multimeter is mostly for the electrician and electronic user
who constantly need this tool to help them measure or detect any problem in electronic
component. Even though the digital multimeter is most likely more convenient to use and
has more practical uses among the technician, there are some other company or person
who still using the analog digital multimeter because the price is more affordable, and it is
easy to read the reading since the analog meter gives fever ghost reading than the digital
meter. The other reason is that analog multimeter require no power source for current and
voltage measurement, less susceptible to electric noise, have border range and are suited to
adjusting tuning circuits or peaking tune able responses.
