VOCABULARY
Ammete
r-instrument that measures the flow of current in a
circuit.
Scale
-range or set of values that the device can measure,
i.e multitester
VOLT-OHM-MILLIAMMETER
-also called as “Multimeters”.
-in VOMs (Volt-Ohm-Milliameter), the several
measuring functions are combined in a
single unit.
-used to measure currents, voltage, and
resistance.
WHERE ITCAN BE USED?
• Electronics Repair & Testing – Checking voltage,
resistance, and current in circuits.
• Household Electrical Work – Diagnosing wiring issues,
outlets, and appliances.
• Other industrial maintenance – Testing machinery,
control panels, and power supplies.
TYPES OF

ANALOG DIGITAL
MULTIMETE MULTIMETE
R
uses microammeter, This device displays the
R
voltmeter, and ohmmeter measurements on a
with a moving pointer to digital screen, making it
show and display its easy to read and
readings. understand the results

PARTS OF MULTIMETER
ANALOG MULTIMETER
Pointer - shows the values read from the scale
Scale - shows the value of what is being
measured
Zero position adjuster - adjusts the needle at
the right scale
Range selection knob - allows switching the
function and scale
Test pins - serves as a conductor from the item
being tested from the multimeter
PARTS OF MULTIMETER
ANALOG
Test probes - used to connect to the device
under theMUL
test TIMETER
Zero Ohm Adjustment Knob - used to calibrate
the multi tester when you want to measure the
resistance of an object
PARTS OF MULTIMETER
POBES
DIGITAL MULTIMETER
Selector knob - includes an arrow pointer at
the end to select the measured parameter.
DISPLAY
PANEL Display panel - the LCD can display up to four
digits under normal conditions and includes a
SELECTO provision to show a negative sign when needed
KNOB
R Ports - displays the three main ports on the
panel (where u put the probes)
Probes - establishes electrical connection
PORTS
between the device under the test (DUT) and
multimeter
OHMMETER
An SCALE
ohmmeter scale is a nonlinear scale
that indicates the value of resistance in
ohms. It's marked from zero to infinity.
Ohms are the unit of measurement for
resistance.

HOW TO READ OHMMETER SCALE OF
MULTITESTER?
The table indicates that the higher the multiplier
setting on the ohmmeter, the higher the
resistance values it can measure.
HOW TO READ OHMMETER SCALE OF
MULTITESTER?
• On the X1 range, a reading of 2 corresponds to
2 ohms.
• On the X10 range, a reading of 2 corresponds
to 20 ohms.
HOW TO READ OHMMETER SCALE OF
MULTITESTER?
• On the X100 range, a reading of 2 corresponds to 200 ohms.
• On the X1k (1,000) range, a reading of 2 corresponds to 2,000
ohms (2kΩ).
• On the X100k (100,000) range, a reading of 2 corresponds to
200,000 ohms (200kΩ).
MEASURING RESISTANCE USING
OHMMETER
Set the Range – Set the
selector switch to the correct
ohm range.
Calibrate the Ohmmeter –
connect the test pins and turn
the zero-ohm knob until the
pointer points to zero. If it
doesn’t, replace the battery.
MEASURING RESISTANCE USING
OHMMETER
Measure Resistance – Attach
the test pins to the device and
check where the pointer moves
on the scale.
Safety Precaution – Never use
the ohmmeter on a circuit with
current flowing because it can
damage the meter or give
incorrect readings.
Check the probes if they are
ok, (for ohmmeter
calibration) The pointer should deflect
a. Set the multitester to the towards ohm reading
correct resistance range.

probes together.

Ohm
Turn the ohm knob if the
pointer doesn’t reach zero.
If it still doesn’t align, the
battery might be low.
Replace it if needed.
If the pointer stays at infinite
resistance, even on the highest ohm
setting, the circuit is broken.
If the pointer moves to zero on the Rx1
setting, it means the circuit has a short
circuit.
If the pointer falls any number
between infinite and zero resistance,
the circuit is in good condition.
HOW TO READ
ANALOG MULTIMETER
RESULT
1.An analog multimeter has a moving needle that indicates the
measurement on a printed scale. The scale usually consists two arcs
for different measurements:
DC voltage- A fixed voltage that flows in one direction, known as direct
current (DC) voltage.
AC voltage- The voltage between the positive and negative terminals in
an alternating current (AC) circuit.
2. Look carefully at the voltage scales (DC or AC). There should be
several rows of numbers beneath the scale.
3. Estimate the value between the numbers.
4. Look at the range setting that the dial of your multimeter is set to
5. Find out more about the dB (decibel) scale, typically the smallest
one in an analog multimeter. It is a logarithmic scale measuring the
voltage ratio (also called gain/loss).
VOLTMETER
SCALE
The voltmeter scale is intended for
reading voltage and can be used to
measure both DC (Direct Current) and AC
(Alternating Current) voltages.

CONCLUSION
- Volt-Ohm-Milliameter (VOM), also called
"Multimeters", is an instrument used to
measure voltage, current, and resistance.
- VOMs have 2 types:
- Analog Multimeter: uses microammeter, voltmeter,
and ohmeter with a moving pointer,to display
readings.
- Digital Multimeter: Displays the readings/
measurements on a screen for easier understanding.
CONCLUSION
-An ohmmeter scale is a nonlinear scale that
indicates the value of resistance in ohms.
-The voltmeter scale is intended for reading
voltages.
