Assignment No:1: Ty BSC It Sancheet Walekar

This document contains answers to 3 questions about examples of the Internet of Things (IoT). Q1 lists 5 examples of IoT applications: a Nike fitness tracker, a smart alarm clock and train schedule checker, smart medicine bottles that light up, a location-based check-in service, and an umbrella with a handle that displays weather forecasts. Q2 explains the "equation of IoT" which defines it as physical objects equipped with sensors, actuators and processors that communicate over the internet to serve a purpose. Q3 diagrams the different roles involved in developing IoT, including designers, hackers, engineers, developers, and artists/craftspeople, and provides examples of what each contributes.

ASSIGNMENT NO :1

Q1) Mention Different Examples and case studies which describe the “Flavour
of Internet of Things” (at least 3 Examples)
Answer:
THE FLAVOUR OF THE INTERNET OF THINGS:

 Nike Wrist Band Tracker:

On your lunch break, a pedometer in your training shoes and a heart

monitor in your wrist band help track your run around the block. The wrist
band’s large display also makes it easy to glance down and see how fast you are
running and how many calories you’ve burned. All the data is automatically
uploaded to your sports tracking site, which also integrates with your online
supermarket shopping account to make it easy to compare with how many
calories you’ve eaten.
 My Train Schedule and alarm clock:

The alarm rings. As we open our eyes blearily, we see that it’s five
minutes later than our usual wake-up time.
(b) It just a simple state machine that slept until it got close to wake-up time, then
startedmonitoring the departure boards.
(c) The clock has checked the train times online, and your train must be delayed, so
it lets you sleep in a little longer.

 Medicine Glowcaps:
Vitality GlowCap is an easy-to-use, comprehensive medication adherence system
comprised of a smart cap and bottle, Vitality Mobile Application, and the Vitality
Medication Adherence Portal. The Medicine Glowcaps are placed in your kitchen
and a blinking light from the glowcap reminds you to take your [Link] you
forfet to take the medicine,it goes online and emails your doctor to remind the patient
to take the medicine.

  Wheredial:

(a) Your phone checks you in automatically to a location-based service (such as

Foursquare).
(b) On your mantelpiece at home, an ornament with a dial notices the change and
starts to turn so that the text on it points to the word “Travelling”.
(c) Your family will also see later that you’ve arrived at “Work” safely.

 Umbrella with Weather-Forecasting Handle:

(a) A model for appropriate embedded technology, the Forecast umbrella provides
information about the likelihood of rain so that users can make a simple, informed
decision about whether to take their umbrella with them as they leave for home.
(b) Using existing Wi-Fi technology to wirelessly pull information from the internet,
Forecast’s lighted umbrella handle glows more intensely with the increased chance
of precipitation offering a clear and unobtrusive signal to the user.

Q2) What is the importance of “Equation for the Internet of Things”? Answer:
The Internet of things is defined as a paradigm in which objects
equipped with sensors, actuators, and processors communicate with
each other to serve a meaningful purpose. Equation of Internet of
Things:
Physical object
+
Controllers, Sensors and Actuators
+
Internet
=
Internet of Things
A. Physical Object:
Devices, vehicles, buildings and other items which are embedded
with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity, which
enables these objects to collect and exchange data.
B. Controllers:
A controller, in a computing context, is a hardware device or a
software program that manages or directs the flow of data between
two entities in a general sense, a controller can be thought of as
something or someone that interfaces between two systems and
manages communications between them.
C. Sensors:
Sensor is a device, module, or subsystem whose purpose is to
detect events or changes in its environment and send the
information to other electronics, frequently a computer processor.
A sensor is always used with other electronics.
D. Actuators:
An actuator is a component of a machine that is
responsible for moving and controlling a mechanism or
system.
E. Internet:
The internet is a globally connected network system that uses
TCP/IP to transmit data via various types of media. The internet is
a network of global exchanges – including private, public,
business, academic and government networks – connected by
guided, wireless and fiber-optic technologies.
Q3) Who is making Internet of Things? Explain with diagram “I Make Things”
with the importance of each team member of IOT development.
Answer:
Although we look at various theoretical aspects in this book, we are largely
interested in the practice of actually designing and making Internet connected
Things. As Internet of Things thought leader and entrepreneur Alexandra

Deschamps-Sonsino noted at the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Power of Making

Symposium, both these words mean many things to different people. The following
graphic depicts her initial attempt to map out the meaning of making things:

The following people make the internet of things:-

 Designer.
 Hacker.
 Engineer.
 Developer.
 Crafrsperson.
 Artist.
Designer:- The role of designer in the Internet of Things to design the interface of
ecommerce websites, or they do frontend development, or they design the business
structure around a product ie its website, application and other touchpoints. Some
designer are also reponsible to design  products physically.
Hacker:- In IOT, we need inhouse hackers for the client’s safety. The inhouse
hackers can test the product and see if there is any slightest of possibility for an
unauthorised user to access the data and cause harm to the owners of the products. If
found any possibility of hacking, the inhouse hackers make the required changes
resulting into the prevention of data accessing.
Engineer:- The role of engineers in  Internet of Things is  to follow the products
they design throughout their entire product lifecycle, enabling engineers to learn how
their design performs in reality so they can create more productive and efficient
products in the future. There are types of professionals such as System
Design Engineers that create the architecture of systems, while IoT Software
Developers work to develop the software within the systems and IoT Solution
Architects create hardware systems.
Developer:- Since Internet of Things involves communication between applications
and physical devices, developers are assigned in different areas, among software
programming, hardware programming, security implementation, networking, and
systems engineering. An IoT developer is one popular role within the
larger IoT field, focusing primarily on the creation of software that allows products
to function and connect to other devices.
Artists and Craftperson:  Artists may collaborate with designers on installations or
with traditional craftspeople on printmaking. Designers and engineers work closely
to make industrial products, and hobbyist “hackers” by their nature, are a diverse
group encompassing various technical and
artistic interests and skills.
