Globalization vs. Colonialism Essay

This academic essay compares globalization and colonialism in three key areas: 1. Colonialism involved the exploitation and domination of other countries through violence, intimidation, and forced cultural assimilation to benefit the colonizing country. Globalization involves more mutual cultural and economic exchange between willing participants. 2. During the colonial period in India, the British East India Company monopolized trade and extracted wealth from the country through taxation, leading to famines and economic decline. In contrast, contemporary Chinese cultural institutions like Confucius Institutes operate within host countries' laws and do not interfere in local politics or culture. 3. In conclusion, while colonialism imposed culture through domination, today's globalization involves the voluntary spread

The globalization is a kind of fair sharing of the culture, language, and economy all over the
world. It is the trend in the modern society. The 18-century’s colonialism was a series of
exploitation led by western country, and it was an obliged cultural invasion. In general, they
are all the exchange of raw material, currency, and culture. However, there are many
differences between these two activities. The purpose of this essay is to contrast the
globalization and colonialism. There are many differences in different fields.

The strategies used in the colonialism were obliged. The exchange of the money and raw
material only benefited one side which means the colonialism was the exploitation on the
other country. People who were from the advance country used the violence, lies,
intimidations to enslave the citizens in colonies. In the primitive period of capital
accumulation, most of colonial states used violent methods such as armed occupation,
overseas immigration, pirate-style plunder, fraudulent trade, bloody slave trading, and so on.
During the period of liberal capitalism, the underdeveloped countries, nations, and regions
were transformed into colonial states’ own commodity markets, raw material producing areas,
investment sites, and sources of cheap labor and mercenaries. People in the colony gradually
change their lifestyle, language, culture gradually. The whole race served as second class
citizens under the western country. They might have the local government or not, but the
government was just henchman of western spirit. Taking what British did in the India as an
example, the colonialism in the India last 190 year. The East India Company belonged to the
British won the war between it and Bengal. After that, the wealth was all taken to the British,
its trade was monopolized by East India companies. The Bangladeshi farmers were forced to
sell their labor power in exchange for extremely low returns and carry heavy taxes. Some

people speculated that the Bengal famine between 1769 and 1773 led to the death of 10
million people. In the May 1858, the British colonial authority executed most of the Indian
royal family members. For the culture and language, native Indians must be educated at a
British-run school to enter Indian Civil Service. For the economy, from 1870 to 1900, the
prevalence of mercantilist policies and imports and the lack of exports led to the drop of
Indian national industries. Due to the decline in the growth rate of the Indian national
industry, its economy decreased from 25% of the world's total GDP in 19 th century to only
one-tenth of the 20th century.

In general term, Globalization refers to the continuous enhancement of global contacts and
the rise of global awareness due to the development of communication and transportation.
“Globalization’ is commonly used as a shorthand way of describing the spread and
connectedness of production, communication and technologies across the world.’’ (
Globalization: theory and experience) The Interdependence between countries on political,
economic, and trade field also boost the globalization. The globalization is the exchange of
the culture in milder way. It can benefit the both side between the globalization.
“Globalization is grounded in the theory of comparative advantage which states that countries
that are good at producing a particular good are better off exporting it to countries that are less
efficient at producing that good.” (What is Globalization? - Meaning and its Importance) Each
side could get what they need for development. Take the Confucius Institute as an example, it
is an organization aimed to spread the Chinese culture all over the world. They need to Obey
the laws and regulations of the host country and accept the supervision of the host country
government. They cannot participate in any activities related to the policy, religion, or
ethnicity of the host country. They are non-profit social organization. What they do is to offer
the standard and professional education of Chinese culture to the people who want to learn. It
is not obliged, and some of them can even get the free education. Compared to what English
did in the India which represented the violence and intimidation in the colonialism, the
Confucius Institute used a mild and friendly way to teach people who are interested in the
Chinese culture.

In conclusion, the globalization and colonialism have different ways to spread their culture or
to commit the exchange of material, money, and products. In the colonialism, the English
used warship and obliged education system to exploit the India. In the contemporary
globalization, the Chinese use the Confucius Institute which could provide the professional
education of Chinese culture but not participate in any activities related to the policy, religion,
or ethnicity of the host country.
