Slam Poetry Writing Guide

This document provides instructions for writing an original slam poem. It outlines three steps: choosing a topic, planning the content and message, and writing the poem. For the first step, it lists example topics and notes the poem can be about any issue or emotion that strongly motivates the writer. The second step involves determining the writer's position on the topic and how to convey emotion and use poetic devices to make an impact. The third step is to write the poem with a title, strong tone, and 2-3 minute length to engage the audience. A rubric is also provided to evaluate the poems.

Writing your own Slam Poem (Planning Page)

First Step: Choosing a Topic

Slam poetry works best when it is about an issue, problem, or emotion that you feel very strongly about.
Below is a list of possible topics. You may also come up with your own idea. You can use the internet
to find out some information about the topic of your poem if you feel that it will help you.

Social Pressures Pro Life or Pro Choice

Relationships Depression, anxiety, or mood disorders
Politics Climate Change
The Death Penalty Pollution
Racism Bullying
Homelessness Divorce
*I have seen this poem completed using some really strange topics that were awesome. Examples
include the following: a first kiss, fears, and annoying siblings. You’re only limited by your
imagination.

1. What topic did you choose? __________________________________________________

Second Step: Once you have chosen the topic for your poem, you need to plan out the “meat” of
your poem.

2. What is the position you are going to take about the topic? What do you want your audience to know
about this topic?

3. How will you use word choice, word combinations and/or emotion? Remember that your challenge is
to be persuasive, even though you’re writing a poem!

4. What poetic devices will you use in your poem to help get your poem have impact?

Third Step: Writing Your Poem

Be sure to follow the slightly unstructured style of the slam poetry we looked at and include:

 A title for your poem

 Slam poetry is unstructured but usually takes about 2 – 3 minutes to read out loud.
 A strong tone that that conveys your feelings and attitudes and makes the reader think about the
subject in a new or different way.
