Vocal Coach, Accompanist, Music Director
Courses Taught (Sole Instructor):
THEA 1027: Musical Theatre Fundamentals I
- This foundational course for first-semester freshmen explores basic music theory and
literacy, analyzing music for storytelling and emotional truth, lyric and libretto analysis,
character research, and general performance practices.
- Students gain a variety of analytical and evaluative tools necessary for a fully integrated
understanding of traditional musical theatre song performance.
- Course culminates in an in-depth musical, lyric and character analysis presentation of a song
of their choosing.
- Students are encouraged to build on a growth mindset foundation, supported with student
assessment based primarily on effort and active participation.
THEA 1037: Musical Theatre Fundamentals II
- This foundational course for second-semester freshmen builds on the musicianship skills
begun in Fundamentals I. Music theory concepts are actively integrated into musical theatre
ensemble singing, covering topics such as sight-reading, rhythm and meter, intervals and
chords while working on students’ ability to sing harmony within an ensemble in a variety of
styles.
THEA 4000: Senior Special Projects (Advanced Audition & Industry Preparation)

seniors in the area of audition techniques and industry preparation.

audition repertoire books, mock auditions, exploring a variety of industry views on

auditioning through interviews, articles, and podcasts, and discussing mental health and
wellness as it relates to auditioning and the industry with a focus on using language that
promotes artist- and human-centered thinking over product and type.
- Master classes and/or Skype talks with industry professionals are integrated whenever
possible to support student learning.
THEA 4028: Senior Vocal Coaching
- This credit is taken by seniors in their final semester in conjunction with Senior Practicum.
Students meet individually for weekly vocal coachings to fine-tune audition books, explore
new repertoire as needed, film material for reels and websites, discuss goals and strategies for
life beyond university, and coach any relevant material for their final Practicum performance.
THEA 3501: Independent Study in Musical Theatre Piano Styles
- This independent study was designed for a musical theatre student who is also pursuing a
music director path and served as a course substitute for the curriculum-required basic piano
course.
- This course provided advanced instruction in piano with an emphasis on improved technical
facility and the study and practical application of the writing styles of contemporary musical
theatre composers.
- In-depth attention was given to the analysis of the mainstage musical If/Then where the
student served as Assistant Musical Director, and Carner and Gregor’s Island Song, a
student-produced production that he music directed.
THEA 3502: Independent Study in Advanced Music Theory Analysis and Application
- This independent study was designed for the same musical theatre/music direction student
and served as a substitute for the curriculum-required basic music theory course.
- This course focused on harmonic analysis of musical theatre repertoire, including both
Roman Numeral and chord symbol analysis, as well as basic transposition.
- In-depth attention was given to the analysis of the mainstage musical Into the Woods and the
upcoming production of Ghost that he will be music directing.

movement synthesis for the musical theatre performer.

musical theatre, each accompanied by a style/history presentation component that I created
after my first year. Students also continue to work ensemble singing skills.
- In addition to in-class work, students meet one-on-one in weekly vocal coachings to support
the integration of musicianship, lyric interpretation and performance style.
