II. Solve the following problems.
1. If x varies direct with y, and x = 27 when y = 6, find x when y = 2.
2. If m varies directly with p², and m = 20 when p = 2, find m when p = 5.
3. If a varies directly with the square of b, and a = 48 when b = 4, find b when a = 147.
4. If A varies directly with the cube of r, how is A affected if r is increased by 10%?
5. For a body falling freely from rest (disregarding air resistance), the distance the body falls varies directly with the square
of the time. If the time is decreased by 20%, how is the distance of the falling body affected?
6. A person’s fingernail growth G (in inches) varies directly with the numbers of weeks W it has been growing.
Fingernails grow at a rate of 0.02 inch per week. For some bizarre reason, you decided not to cut your
fingernails and they did not break. Determine how long your fingernails have lengthened after a year.
7. The velocity v of a falling object is directly proportional to the time t of the fall. If, after 2 seconds, the velocity of a falling
object is 64 feet per second, what will be its velocity after 3 seconds?
8. The cost C of an airplane ticket is proportional to the number M of miles of the trip. A 3000-mile trip costs P22, 000.
What is the cost of a 450-mile trip?
9. u is inversely proportional to v. If v = 30, then u = 12.
10. y varies inversely with the square root of w. If w = 4, then y = 1.5.
11. r is directly proportional to s and inversely proportional to t. If s = -2 and t = 4, then r = 7.
12. y is directly proportional to the square of x and inversely proportional to the cube of z. If x = 5 and z = 3, then y = 25.

13. q varies inversely with the sum of x and y. If x = 0.5 and y = 0.7, then q = 1.4.
14. For a constant area, length of a rectangle varies inversely with its width. The length of a rectangle is 27 feet when the
width is 10 feet. Find the length of a rectangle with the same area if its width is 18 feet.
15. For an electric cable of fixed length, the resistance is inversely proportional to the square of the diameter of the cable.
Given that a cable having a fixed length is 0.4 cm in diameter and has a resistance of 0.5 ohm, what is the
resistance of the same type of cable having a fixed length and a diameter of 0.1 cm?
16. In a certain province, the average number of telephone calls per day between any two towns is directly proportional
to the product of their populations and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. Towns
A and B are 25 km apart and have populations 10 000 and 5000, respectively. Telephone records indicate and average
of 2000 calls per day between the two towns. Estimate the average number of calls per day between town A and
another town, with a population of 15 000 people and is 100 km from A.
17. The electrical resistance R of a wire varies directly with its length l and inversely with the square of its diameter d. If
a wire 100 feet long with a diameter of 0.01 inches has a resistance of 25 ohms, find the resistance of a wire made
of the same material that has a diameter of 0.015 inch and is 50 feet long.
18. Body mass index, or BMI, is used by physicians to assess a person’s level of fatness. A BMI from 19 through 25 is
considered desirable. BMI varies directly with an individual’s weight (in pounds) and inversely with the square of
the individual’s height (in inches). A person who weighs 118 pounds and is 64 inches tall has a BMI of 20 (The
BMI is rounded to the nearest whole number). Find the BMI of a person who weighs 165 pounds and has a height
of 70 inches.
19. If u varies inversely with the square of v, how is u affected when v is increased by 25%?
20. If z varies directly with the square of x and inversely with y, how is z affected when x is increased by 30% and y is
increased by 10%?
21. If r varies directly with the square of s and inversely with t, what effect on z does doubling x and tripling y have?
22. The stiffness of a beam varies directly with the product of its breadth and depth and inversely with the square of its
length. Find the change in stiffness if each of the three dimensions is increased by 10%.
23. If c varies jointly with a² and b³, and c = -16 when a = 1 and b = 2, what is c when a = 2 and b =-1?
24. If t jointly proportional to √𝑟𝑠 and s³, and t = -162 when r = 12 and s = 3, find t when r =16 and s =1.
25. If z is jointly proportional to the square root of x and square of y, and z = 315/2 when x =49 and y = 3, what is y so
that z = 375 when x = 36?
26. If z is directly proportional to the square of x and inversely to the fourth power of y, and z = 5/4 when x = 5 and y = 2,
find z when x =25 and y = 4.
27. If p is jointly proportional to x and y and inversely to z², and p = 2 when x = y = 6 and z = 3, find x so that p = 3 when
y = 6 and z = 2.
For numbers 28 and 29, use the fact that the load a rectangular beam can support is jointly proportional to its width
and the square of its depth and inversely proportional to its length.
28. If a rectangular beam 5 cm wide and 6 cm deep can support a 43.2 kg load, how much load can it support when turned
on its side?
29. One rectangular beam is twice as wide, twice as long, and twice a deep as another. Find the ratio of the loads that they
can support.
