Today, we’re announcing that Google is transferring the Open Health Stack code and assets to The Linux Foundation, which will launch the Open Health Stack Software Foundation as a new, community-led home for the project. Originally launched in 2023, Open Health Stack is a suite of open-source tools grounded in global health standards. OHS-SF will give developers the building blocks to power AI-enabled digital health solutions. In support of the project’s long-term growth, Google.org is providing a $3 million grant. Delays in chest X-ray review can mean treatable diseases like tuberculosis go undiagnosed, especially in clinics with limited resources. In Pretoria, South Africa, a team at Nexus Intelligence is using AI to help make screenings more timely and accessible. Leveraging Google’s CXR model, their team developed Nexus AI, a CE-certified medical device designed to support clinicians in screening chest X-rays for lung abnormalities, including findings suggestive of TB. In as little as 45 seconds, the healthcare provider can see the original X-ray enhanced with heatmaps and contour lines to bring potential findings to their attention. The tool can also run entirely offline, helping support screening in communities with limited internet access. To date, Nexus AI has processed over 25,000 X-rays across 40 locations in six nations. New publication from Google Research and Google DeepMind in Nature: We advance AMIE, our research medical AI, from one-off diagnostic conversations toward treating and managing disease over time, using clinical guidelines and drug formularies. In our randomized study, now published in Nature, we showed that AMIE demonstrated physician-level capabilities for treating and managing disease over sequential, multi-visit encounters with patient actors. The findings suggest that conversational medical AI systems like AMIE could one day help augment care and give doctors back time with their patients where it truly matters. While AMIE remains an experimental research system and is not ready for medical deployment, these peer-reviewed findings contribute to our strong commitment to evidence generation in AI for medical applications, offer an early look at how AI could help support long-term disease management.
